Seems a few other club luminaries are also mia ...

jt1 is probably on a secret mission. ;)

Hope fiVe is healthy maybe he is undercover too.

welcome pcola, J4me, kptaylor and steak-knife.

642 and x4x's here. You'll find that trigger control practice in DA on this platform, will help, exponentially, if and when you think you have need for a more 'offensive' weapon.

The 642 is an 'always' gun, however, in my book.

Howdy folks! Well I guess I will be in the club in the next couple or few weeks.

I bought a 442 yesterday:D.

The shop just has to order it, and try to find one with no lock IF they can.

I will have to wait for a little while but thats no big deal.

I'm in S. Cal. and the prices here are always a little higher then in other places but WOW the price on these guns have gone up from what they were a year or so ago.

One shop I looked at wanted 498.00 for a 442 same shop also wanted ~650.00 for a 642 with some kind of wood grips on it. CRAZY I SAY :cuss:!!

I got mine for 475.00 before all the CA tax and add on gun buying fees.

Anyhow I'm happy with what I will be getting.

So what extras should I get now? :p

New check in, bought a 442 recently, also have a 637. Shot the 637 for CWP class, did real good. The wife shot a large 38 for the class, liked my 637, gave it to her. Good reason to buy a 442. Will be getting a 640 later this year.

Thanks all for the welcoming comments and advice for this noobee. I'll be seeing you around.

So having asked several people if it is safe to dry fire my 642 and getting mixed results, I happened to see on the S&W website that it is indeed safe to dry fire it. I guess if they say it themselves and it ends up breaking or something...then they will take care of any repairs.

I'm not saying I'm gonna sit at my desk watching TV and just go crazy with it...but to practice drawing and actually pulling the trigger to get a feel for the entire motion and firing process might behoove me. Getting those special dry fire caps might be good too.

(heh now that i read this post it seems like im just picking up from the middle of a conversation. oh well. its not...it's just me thinking and typing at 3:30am)

Rawb77

From some of the posts I've read here it seems many people have actually sat in front of the TV and dry fired their x42 a few hundred times to smooth out the trigger. :)

Hey, things change with how guns are made. Some people are die hard traditionalists when it comes to guns and stick with old ideas long after they are no longer relevant.

If S&W says you can dry fire your model then you can dry fire it. They made it, they would know.

Click away!!:D

Its was posted in black and white on S&W's website. Thats what I say!

I've only fired my 642 maybe 125 times. The trigger feels smooth to me...but being a first time gun owner as of 2 months ago...what do I know?

Not like I'm all to worried about it eh? Looking at how the firing mechanism work...I cant see how pulling the trigger with no ammo would hurt it anyways. The pin pops forward to hit the cap of the round whether or not that round is there.

"Staging" the trigger

I've been doing a lot of dry-firing (using A-Zoom snapcaps) with my new 642 to smooth out the trigger, and I've noticed something. I can very easily pull the trigger slowly enough to work it much like a SA trigger. I hear two distinct clicks. Right after the second one, that means the cylinder has moved into place, and I know another hair-trigger pull will fire.

Now, I wouldn't count on this actually serving just like SA, because it is inexact... I could (especially under pressure) possibly not hear/feel those clicks clearly, and misjudge when the firing will happen. So I would always be on target assume the gun could fire as soon as I start pulling the trigger. It's just an interesting thing I noticed. When I get it out on the range, that may help me with accuracy on slow shots. We'll see.

Hello 642'ers

Just found this site today (thanks Mike) and joined immediately. Just learning my way around this forum and started off on page 1 and by the end of page 2 I'd had enough of the nashing and grinding about the shutting down of Part I (I guess I'll understand why when I go back to reading the early pages). In exploring I've already printed off a couple of post for future reference. This is an outstanding forum.

I purchase my first handgun, a 642 about 3 months ago and the learning curve has been steep, but well worth it. I've changed the grip to a Hogue which increased my accuracy greatly. Having another finger on the grip helps me a lot. Then I changed the trigger to a lighter spring and found even more improvement. I am really pleased with this gun (thanks again Mke).

Tonight is classroom test night on CCW class I'm in and its been some 30+ hours and has really been great. If I pass tonight (put your $ on me betters) I go to three 3 hour range days. We needed 300-400 rounds for this class and it has been a real job finding it. I have more than I need now but it has been a job. What's going on with the ammo shortage? Everyone I ask just says something like _ it's going to be one hell of a war _ . Can I say that??

So thanks in advance for all the help I know you guys (and gals?) are going to give me.

ReadyRob (did I say I really like this gun?)

YAY! The shop got my 442 in and were able to find the no lock model!! :D:D

Pretty quick work, only took them 4 days to get the gun in the shop.

They did misplace my paper work I filled out but that was ok, it gave me a reason to go say hello to my new little friend.:p Just a few days and I can pick it up.

Already on the list for my pocket holster......only around 11 weeks give or take for that. ;)

New member here working my way through the previous posts. Seeing references to there being an actual membership for the x42 Club w/application form, membership card and who knows what else. Is this just 'funning' for the newbies or is there an actual membership?

I would like to join, what do I need to do?

Spent the afternoon at the range as part of my CCW class and had great fun. Another class member had a 642 in black, really sharp looking. I didn't get to spend a lot of time w/it. Anyone know the history of this black model, it is new? Heard this person talking about maybe selling it, too much recoil.

Funny, I have been thinking that it would sure be a good idea to have a back up . . .

Rob, you just did. Welcome.

Yeah, we're just funnin' about the application.
This is really just another thread,
even if a really, really long one.
It's kind of a club, but open to anybody
whether they own one or not.
All that's required here is interest in the mule.

Of course, new members have to buy
a box of rnds for existing members.
I'll take a box of Speer GD 135 gr +p, please. :)

Where to buy Speer GD 135 gr +p ammo ???????

Speaking of Gold Dot, where is a good place to buy it online? Can't find it locally anywhere.

Thanks,

J4Me

YES! Just got me a Brand New 642 WITHOUT the internal lock. So happy to find it! The dealer made me pay about $50 more for the no lock, but I'll gladly pay as I know the value will be much more than that in the "lawyer engineering" years to come.

Hello, I have had my 442 for about seven weeks now. I have put a few hundred rounds thru it and I love it. It is a great carry gun and accurate enough for social work.

Burning Issues of Our Times

What's going on with the ammo shortage?

For answer(s) to this question see the myriad posts/threads dealing with this issue. Here is one from THR.

If you don't have a life and you can spend the evening on the internet and might find it (in stock) by browsing 20 different sites that (used) to sell ammunition. Once in a while you will get lucky, but I haven't seen any in awhile.

I would opt for this for the time being while it is available:
http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/product_info.php/cPath/23_66_113/products_id/2849

I would suggest your best bet might be a local gun shop. Just about anyplace I go (lgs) you can find a box (albeit expensive) of the good stuff, ie. JHP for PD. At over $20 per box.
More difficult is ball for the range.

SGDFSB, talk to Nem, he has it all from membership tribute payment. :D

I had forgotten that little dues issue. ;) Might never get in if that were true these days.

I was born at night, but it was not last night. Nice try though

Hey Penny

Wanna go steady? Those black x42's are the sharpest lookin' piece of steel going. Wish I had know about black being available when I got mine, course I wouldn't part w/it now for nothin' . . . unless, you want to go steady . . .
