So I went to buy a 442 this am because the 642 was out of stock, the 442 had the internal lock.
Did I not read that SW was making these without the internal locks?
I didnt get approved for immediate purchase so now I have a week to get back up to speed on the lock issue.
Please give info thanks.

Yes they do make the x42 with out the lock. I just got a 442-1, which is the NO lock model. The lock model is the -2.

In fact here it is. :)

Its a NO lock model. :p

I shot this little revolver today for the first time. Went through a box of ammo of 132 grain non +ps and fired 10 rounds of the +Ps, Federal 125 grain JHPs. I instantly liked this gun; no warm up period to it at all. Very, very VERY nice! Even could keep rounds in the chest area of the silhouette target I was using at 25 yards. Good stuff.

Recoil was very manageable with both non +P and +P ammo. The difference is noticeable but not a big deal with the ammo I was using. I’m eager to try the “FBI Load” Remington makes, when I can find some.

MIA member checking in.

Hope everyone is well.

Happy Memorial Day.

haven't had a chance to shoot any gun for a couple of weeks. Hope to get to the range next week and feed them all 50-100 rounds.

Now the 442 is out of stock so I bought a 642 with crimson trace grips for pickup tomorrow-any disadvantage to the laser grips besides the $200 lol?

I'm asking for a friend -
Does anyone know of a 642 Airweight that is for sale today? DUH, Where?

Is there a difference other than the "lock" between a 442 and 642?

thanks

Hi all. I have to admit that I have never been much of a revolver shooter. However, I hated carrying around a glock 27 for a backup, and bought a 642 airweight two days ago. I went to the range today and shot about 75 round of +P through it. Wow, amazing gun. Way more accurate that I ever imagined for a barrel that is only 1 7/8! I easily kept a group in the torso of a body target at 25 yards! This gun is awesome to carry and easy to shoot. Don't ask me why I waited so long to try one of these out, what a waste of all these years not having this gun. Great thread by the way with all of the great info on this gun. Thanks.

Former member from a couple of years ago here . . .

Hadn't seen this thread in a while . . . see the same folks are still at it. Hello Nemo and DAdams.

Thought I'd pass on an FYI. As of this moment Natchez Shooters Supply has 135gr. Speer GDHP-SB available for order. Pricey at $30/box, but they at least have some. www.natchezss.com

New guy here, old 642 shooter.

Replaced my 642 that I sold off a few years ago, with a no-lock 642. Bought this 642 last fall. Definitely keeping this one.

Any thoughts on the Hogue Bantam grips? My 642 came with the Uncle Mikes boot grips. They're ok. But the Hogue grips appear as if they might feel better. Have yet to find any in stock so as to feel one in person.

Should I gamble and spend $20 bucks on the little Hogue grips, or stay with the Uncle Mike grips that came with the gun?

I went with the Uncle Mike's combat grips. They cover the back strap and I can get my pinky on the grips for better control. In a Mika Holster they still conceal in my front pocket. S&W no longer has the Uncle Mike's but has something pretty close.

I also have the Crimson Trace Laser Grip's and I highly recomend them.

Hey Beat Trash

I replaced the stock grips on my 642-2 (which SW told me were a outsource item made by Uncle Mike's) w/"Hogue Monogrip Revolver Stocks." The package on front says "Made For: Smith & Wesson J Frame Round Butt." On the back of package where it lists "This grip fits ..." 642 is not mentioned, but other similar models are - i.e. 442.

It has been the best 20 bucks I have spent in a long time. The Hogue allows my little finger on the grip, the gun is easier to remove from holster, or putting the gun in holster for that matter. And aiming is much better as in it improved my groups a lot.

BTW, I got mine off eBay for $15 and $5 shipping. You might check that out if your an eBayer.

So if I haven't been clear enough, I really like these grips. Its like a different gun as far as grip and aiming for me, and this was one great gun before the grip change.

Watchtower, look for one that allows one to loosen or tighten the "grip strength" of the holster - how tight the gun fits inside - with a screw.

You might also mention to the holster maker that you've got the CT grips. They may be able to mold you one specifically for it.

I started with a Desantis Nemesis pocket holster and a Desantis clip on nylon holsters. The pocket is okay, I hate the clip on. Too soft, fumble getting it out and in holster. I say the pocket is okay but to tell you the truth I'm not sure I could get it out fast enough to save my life. Kinda like Barney Fife, if you know what I mean. I've practiced a lot, and its just not very fast. They were both around $20 and that's about what they're worth.

I have a custom belt leather holster w/FBI cant on order. Its called High Ride and will slide onto a 3" belt. Been ordered at least a month and still at least a month away. $70 or so, I've forgotten its been so long ago.

There is a ton of people making custom leather holsters. I just finished a gun class were one of the handouts was full page of custom holster makers. EVERYONE was either not taking new orders because of the wait time (6 months in some cases), or as in my case at least 2-3 MONTHS wait time.

I didn't really know what I wanted, its a learning process. People told me I would wind up w/a shoe box full of holsters before I found what I really wanted. Different holsters will fit different needs and events.

I learned that the 'custom leather' means a hard leather holster made to fit your exact gun and in your case it would fit the laser grips. Be sure to mention the laser grips when you start 'talking' to the holster guys/gals.

Goggle leather holsters and be prepared to spend some time at the 'puter learning a thing or two about holsters. Make it a Christmas present to yourself. <G> :)

Thanks for stopping by. Always nice to know that a member of the family is in circulation and alive and well.

Holsters for X42s many, many, many. But for pocket carry the aforementioned hundreds of times are the Mika round or square cuts. They are around twenty dollars, and Robert Mika is a standup guy to do business with. While waiting for the Mika get a Desantis Nemesis, (not superfly IMO) they are available in stock at many LGS and on-line.

OWB, I only have one and it works well with a 642 with CT 405 grips. It would work as designed perfectly for all J Frame Centennials snubs and the ilk family. Blackhawk Speed Classic. No strap but it fits tight, and reasonably priced. Optics Planet usually has them at one of the best prices.

The CQC are intriguing but I don't know if they work with the CT 405/305.
Anyone know?

Welcome to those new to the site.

Trigger Offset

I recently purchased a S&W 642 and noticed the trigger is not square with the trigger guard - it is offset to the right and is not loose in any way. The gun shoots fine - any recommendations on what to do - send it back? Thank you.

I can finally join...I hope!

I thought I would never see one. My dealer had this as showing out of stock so he kept a look out for me. 3 months later (last week) I got the call it was in stock and he could order. Of course I said 'yes' and the order was placed. Not too bad for a titch over 4 bills.

Picked it up tonight and only ran 20 rounds through it. I had a couple optics to get dialed in on the ARs before dark hit. From what I can tell it's wicked accurate for it's stout size, has a bit of a punch with +P ammo and shoots PMC gold better than Winchester White Box. Those are the only 2 types of ammo I could find in a short time period. I'm gonna try and get some of that Buffalo something or other I read about on here. This just could be my favorite pistol giving my 1911 a run.

Yep, it's the "No Internal Lock" version I was holding out for.

Bye the way, I ordered a Mika holster last week in black. I realized it would take 12-16 weeks to get one and was absolutely fine with it as I mentioned to Mr. Mika in an e-mail. He gave me a personal call and offered a holster that was the same in design but blue. I of course accepted that deal as well. If his holsters are as good as he is (I'm sure they are), I'll be passing on my praise to my buddies.

Enjoy my pics I snapped tonight after a quick cleaning!!

John173 - Is the trigger dragging on either side of the frame or is it just not centered? If it is dragging you can either send it back or you can buy a shim kit from Brownells and fix it yourself. It it is cosmetic you can apply the same fix.

Nice 642. Much better looking without the hole in the side. I like the new grip pattern and I see the screws are coated, hopefully powdercoated to resist the common rusting that takes place.

The Mika is available in round or square cut it makes somewhat of a difference based on the cut of your pocket and the cant you desire when in place or how well it stays in position when on the move. I have a round cut and it seems to work well in most circumstance. The DeSantis Nemesis for under $20 is also worth a try, it is flat on the bottom so more the square version of the Mika. I suspect due to the diminutive size you will find it becomse on of your favorite carries. Uncle Mike's holsters are inexpensively availabe at most LGS if you want to try the concept of IWB with the 642.
Don't forget the Bianchi Speedstrips.

Thanks for the report and nice polish job on the .38s ;) good pics.
