Hey fellas need some advice on a decent price for a s&w 686 .357 mag with 7 shot cylinder. black synthetic grips and stainless finish with no wear. I have only seen pictures of the gun but it is like new in box with receipts and all the accesories that came with it. It has never been fired except for at the factory. What is a decent price for one of these revolvers?
Hes asking around 600 dollars.
Im not much of a revolver expert and dont know much about smiths.

The 686 is a very good revolver. The version with a 7 shot cylinder is a 686+ or 686 plus. S&W distinguish design changes for a specific model by placing a dash and a number after the model. 686-1 would be the first revision, 686-2 the next, 686-3, and so on. The very first 686's had no dash after the model. The model number is stamped on the frame behind the cylinder crane. The current production 686's are 686-6 and I assume the gun you are looking at is the same. $500-$600 would be the price range I would be looking at for a 686-6 Plus. The gun, with the factory box and original grips, in unfired condition would, in my opinion be worth $600. The barrel length can affect price as well. The standard barrel lengths are 2.5", 4", 6". The shorter barrels go for slightly more than the longer one's. anything different than the lengths listed would make the gun more valuable.

600 clams would be a good price on a regular 686, so since the 686 plus adds about a $75 premium, I'd say that $600 is a very nice price.

Beware though, if you think you'll ever decide to shoot competitions, most ONLY allow sixguns...not seven-guns :D

I own and regularly shoot a 686 no-dash. You won't be disapointed with the gun. As I've said before, I believe the 686 to be THE greatest DA revolver out there - beating the Ruger GP100 AND the Colt Python. Yeah, that's right...I said it. Haha!

Around here, new 686+s go for about $700. So iffin it were me in the market I'm in, I'd offer him $550 and let the negotiations begin!

wow thanks for the help. In the pictures i cant make out the model number but all i see is a 686. No dash afterwards or any other designation. Im gonna see if hes really wanting to get rid of it and take a little cash with me. He did say it has the nicest SA trigger hes ever felt. Hopefully he hasnt already fallen for it:uhoh:

I think the seven shot first appeared with the -4 model, the -5 was the last without the integrated lock.

Does the one you are considering have a lock or no?

Either way, that price is good, for a -4 it would be a steal. For a -5 it would be petty larceny :)

more info.
Its a 4 inch 686 7 shot stainless with internal lock. still not sure which dash it is and wont see the guy at work again until this weekend.

I love the 686 so much that I bought two :) for reference I just bought a 4" 6 shot for $700 new. The other one I over paid for but had to have it. It's a 5" Talo edition 7 shot with unfluted cylinder. I paid in the $800 range new for that one.

When buying it of course look at all the normal things you look at on a revolver but with the newer 686s S&W has been hit or miss on their barrel alignment. Pay particular attention that barrel is properly indexed before you buy.

That same gun you are considering is new under glass at the indoor range pro shop I frequent; $789 plus tax IIRC.

If I didn't already have a 686 I would be all over one in that condition for that price.

Also, I think book on those at 100% is around $650 last time I looked. Good luck, I'm pullin' for ya.

+1

I bought one without looking too carefully at the barrel. It took a trip back to S&W before it ever went to the range.

The internal lock should lessen the value of the gun

The internal lock should lessent the value of the revolver
in my opinion. Never liked them, never will.

i agree kemper. i still like the smith though. it sure is purty. looks like he hasnt made a decision yet. :cuss: anyways thanks for the help. maybe i can sweet talk him a little

It depends. I've been shopping for a pre-lock 4" 686+ for months (just found one).

If it's pre-lock (a 686-4 or 686-5), and a 4", $800-1200 is what they're going for online these days, depending on condition.

If it's a pre-lock and any other length barrel, $700-900 in the past few months.

If it has the lock, and is like-new, then $750-850 in my experience in the past few months.

A lot depends on the dash number. The plus started in -4. It originally had the different thumb release and has flash-chromed hammer and trigger, but changed to have MIM parts and the modern thumb release. The 04 has a hammer-mounted firing pin. These get a premium and don't come up often. The -5 is the only other pre-lock. It has a frame-mounted firing pin and some other minor differences.

Depending on age, barrel length and condition, $600 may be a good-great price.
