I saw a rifle chamberd in the 7.5x57. I dont know anything about the round. i.e. can you get ammo at a ok price? and is the caliber any good. the rifle itself was around 120. any help would be appreciated.

Folks must be busy with the election.
What little I know it is a good medium sized game round .
It has killed a lot of folks.
Ammo is available at a bunch of places listed on this forum and others.
I saw a site listed surplus riles.com and

Dont ignore this site because of the title like I did .
Some one else here will be able to help a lot more than me
:scrutiny:

I can think of the 7x57 Mauser, the 7.5x54 French, the 7.5x55 Swiss, the 7.65x53 Mauser, and the 7.35x52 Carcano - but I've never heard of a 7.5x57.....

Was this was a military surplus rifle? Do you recall anything about the name of the rifle itself?

I think you are right. It was 7x57. I'm not familiar with the mil-surp. rifles. but the price seemed to fit for rifle for throughing in the truck.

That's the "7mm Mauser". Common round for sporting use worldwide at one point and the common rifle round for military use in South America. With a proper load it'll drop anything deer sized without a problem.

The 7x57 is presently one of my favorite rounds, and the round that I'll be hunting with this year. It's got enough punch for most non-dangerous game, moderate recoil, and it'll shoot bullet weights from 100gr to 175gr. It's a good round. You'll not likely find any cheap surplus ammo for it, but it's still not terribly expensive - say, $15/box on average.

There have been number of rifles chambered in 7x57. The 1893 and 1895 Mausers, for starters, along with some post-1898 Mausers and a bunch of commercial rifles. If it's an old surplus Mauser - keep in mind that it's between 100 and 115 years old, and have it checked out before you shoot it. Most decent condition but non-matching serial number '93-'95 Mausers will set you back around $200. For $120 - you better know what you're getting into.

I love my 7mm X 57mm Mauser. I have a Rem 700 Mnt Rifle that can be loaded to modern pressures. There is also a rimmed version for double rifles(7X57R), and a 6.5mm X 57mm (the 7mm Mauser necked down to 6.5) that is very popular in Europe.
