7.62 in .308 Winchester Model 70 Coyote?

Ok,

I did a quick search here and on the web and I could not find a definitive answer to my question. I have read that it is not wise to shoot commercial .308 Winchester in a 7.62 rifle. But it is ok to shoot milsurp 7.62 rounds in a modern .308 Winchester rifle. Is that correct?
Here’s what I have .
Winchester Model 70 Coyote (Pre-FN)

So, would I be ok shooting 7.62 out of this rifle? Not a steady diet, but just in case.

With your rifle, you can shoot either .308 Win or 7.62x51 without problems.

7.62x51mm military brass tends to be thicker and harder than commercial 308 Winchester brass. Commercial 308 hunting loads are usually have brass is softer, case capacity slightly higher and bullet weights heavier than advisable with semi-auto military rifles in 7.62x51mm.

My son has a Savage 110 bolt-action in .308 and 7.62 FN FAL and HK91.
.308 and 7.62 loads both OK in the Savage, but 7.62 loads only for the FAL or 91.

There is truth to it USSR,

All you need to do is look at 308 "Service Rifle" reloading data...for example, the max charge of Varget in a bolt gun, according to Hornady #7, is 44 grains with 168 grain bullets...In the 308 "Service Rifle" section it says 42.7 grains is max.

I know that the military uses case mouth transducers to measure pressure, which measure the pressure after it peaks...SAAMI uses mid case transducers that measure peak pressure.

It was early when I made my first post up there, and I should have done a better job on it...I will edit it so that it will be correct.

Or you could always just pull the bullet out of an M118LR round and measure the case volume (water), then weigh the powder charge (RL15)...and run it through QuickLoad, and see for yourself.
