I know .308 and 7.62x51 are the same round basically can u shoot them in either gun without problems. can u shoot .308 in a gun chambered for 7.62 safely or the other way around. I know thiers SAAMI (think its the proper acroynm) specs and i dont know the diffrence. Cause i i know ur not suppose to shoot 5.56 out of a .223 gun. so can somebody forgive the lack of info and quickly explain.

Hi there

You can shoot 7.62x51 in a .308 chamber wiht no problems , but you shoudnt shoot .308 in a 7.62x51 chamber because the .308 has higher pressures . good luck

Wow. Here we go again. These rounds are essentially identical. Operating pressures are essentially identical. The only difference I have ever seen is in the engineer's drawing of the 7.62: important external dimensions only have NEGATIVE production tolerances. This has important implications when slamming cartridges into fouled machine gun chambers.

With rare exceptions, we don't have to worry about this.

The only time this becomes hazardous is feeding .308 Win (with a possible "plus-tolerance" round) into 7.62 chambers or fouled "match tolerance" .308 Win chambers.

For the vast majority of users, the rounds are interchangeable.
