7.62 or 5.45 in an AK?

Which chambering do you recommend for an AK?

I've spent some time firing Mini-14's and that's about it for centerfire rifles.

I'm interested in an AK, but having a hard time deciding between a 5.45 & 7.62 chambering.

A web search indicates that 5.45 is loads of fun, hardly any recoil with the brake, and ammo is a bit cheaper than 7.62.

Is 7.62, out of an AK, still a ton of fun to shoot? How's the recoil? Quick follow-ups pretty easy? I like the fact that 7.62 ammo is being produced domestically, unlike 5.45.

I understand recoil is very subjective, but can someone quantify the way 7.62 feels versus 5.45 or 5.56?

Keep in mind that from what I've heard the 5.45x39 ammo is so cheap due to the fact that the countries that were using it in Europe are switching to the 5.56 to be the same as the rest of the NATO members...so once the surplus 5.45x39 ammo dries up...it won't be cheap any longer! 5.56 is going to be around for a while!

There are still a bunch of countries that can only afford Russian type weapons. AK 74 and the ammo it requires will be available for a long time.

I've never seen 5.45 at a store. I always see 7.62X39.

I never see 9x18 Makarov at the local gun store, or Wal Mart either. Its still around, and is usually cheaper than 9x19; per 500 or 1k rds online.

7.62. Bigger. Badder. Barrier Penetration. Original. As far as I can see, it's the best all around combat round (ie. for regular infantry. Not snipers and DM's) that has be fielded in any significant number in the past 6o years or so.

5.45 is faster handling than 7.62x39, and has a better trajectory meaning most people wil get better accuracy at ranges distant enough for range estimation to be an issue. You can also carry a bunch more 5.45 than 7.62x39 for the same weight, if that's a consideration.

7.62x39 would get the nod for a bigger hole in the target and more bullet weight thrown down range.

Both are good rounds -- just different pluses and minuses.

+1. The current prices are based on the fact that Bulgaria, Romania, and assorted other former Warsaw Pact countries are getting switched over to NATO compliant 5.56mm, kind of like the big glut of 7.62x51 ammo that hit the market back when South Africa and some of the NATO nations finally converted to 5.56mm.

Once that surplus is burned up, ammo prices will be going up -- though as long as we can still get it imported from eastern Europe, I don't think prices will be too insane. There is the possibility of some legal nastiness cutting off those suppliers, but I'm pretty certain there are enough AK-74s out there here in the US that our manufacturers would step in and start making ammo (though not necessarily cheap ammo) if they did not have to compete with the Bulgarians, Wolf et al in Russia, etc.

Noticably more recoil, though neither one is going to beat you up. The 7.62 AK will be a little slower back on target and such, but the speed differential is not huge.

High Planes Drifter "There are still a bunch of countries that can only afford Russian type weapons. AK 74 and the ammo it requires will be available for a long time."

They aren't changing the rifles just the caliber, those countries are still using the AK based rifle in 5.56, or they are using 7.62x39 versions as there are huge supplies of 7.62x39 surplus readily available to the rest of the world steel core surplus is only banned for import into the USA And actually Russia is the only country still producing 5.45x39 and that ammo is not leagal for import untill its been in a non-soviet country for at least 5 years as surplus cannot be exported directly from Russia........ what is currently in the USA is all thats likally to be imported as the BATF is dragging their feet on approving the form 6s for SURPLUS ammo imports, sporting commercial ammo is fine but nothing new in the way of Surplus for the past 12 months, if Hillary or Obama get in the whitehouse there will be no future surplus ammo imports which will drive up the cost of military caliber commercial "Sporting" ammo like Wolf, Golden tiger etc...

7.62x39 is still the most widely used caliber world wide and even the 5.45 never really quite matched it as far as number of countries using the 7.62x39....

If your going to go with 5.45x39 ya better start stackin up at least 50K rounds since there is no domestic supplier of the caliber (unlike 7.62x39 which is made by several domestic companies) if the UN and the liberals get there way there will be ZERO ammo importable in any military caliber within the next 4 years, I doubt they will succeed but...... having a rifle with no other option but imported ammo..... well take a look around at 7.62x51 Nato chambered rifles that were insanly popular just 2 years ago, once the surplus ammo outa Africa (the largest source for cheap surplus) got blocked by UN agreements the cost of feeding those .308 rifles jumped overnight as everyone is now dependant on what surplus is available at near commercial prices or high dollar commercial sporting .308 instead of the lighter loaded 7.62x51 ..... the result? I've been buyin up those G3s, PTR 91s and CETMEs for half what the owners paid for em and usually with a ton of extras to boot just so the owners can buy em a 7.62x39 AK or put the $$ towards an AR................ when the surplus 5.45x39 is finally dried up I will be buying up NON-WASR (ie actual military spec) AKs for a fraction of what they are selling for today........ I've got 2 pallets of ammo to feed em just sitting so it will be available... I'll then turn the guns around at a premium with 740 rnds of ammo included, they'll sell easy if the ammo goes with em...... ya know when that ammo is $0.60 per round or better ;) I'm saving the 7.62x51 stuff I've been buying up for the same kinda deal as I bought up all the South african battle packs I could when they were still $22 ea shipped to my door as well as Portuguese surplus ammo when it was $81 per 1000 rnds etc..... have watched it happen several times in the last 35 years, in fact buyin up SKSs and AKs back in the 80s and 7.62x39 was hard to find is how I funded a large part of the collection of NFA toys :p during the AWB I was trading off Chicom preban AKs for Garands and all manner of other goodies..........

So ya'll load up on them 5.45 cal AKs, I won't be buyin any commercial built for export to USA only guns , but the ones that have actual military history.... they'll be worth exactly half what ya pay for em today, the 7.62x39s having readily available cheap ammo... they'll continue to hold their value

I went with 7.62x39 for this poll and likely would if I every by and AK.

My second choice for a military style AK would be 5.56 NATO though that might be my first choice for a Saiga.

5.45 would be my last choice.

Reasons?

Went Christmas SHopping to day and looked and found 7.62x39 and .223 at wallyworld and Sports authority. Nice US made reloadable cases with either hunting bullets of FMJ stuffed in the front

No one carried 5.45mm in any format.

Sure, I could by a case or two of 5.45 on line and just shoot from that for a few years if I just shot only say 200 rounds a year just to make sure it still worked, but what if I "need" a good hunting cartridge? What if I want to keep my cost low in the future by reloading?

I suppose if some on did offer a reloadable case, even a berdan one that one would have to pry fired primers out of and some one was willing to spend a small pile of money upfront Corbin might build you a custom made model of their ".22 Jacketed bullets from .22LR cases" machines to make 5.45 bullets.

I wonder if it might not be worth whle to have such a swage system made up to make hunting JSP bullets that might be used with 5.45 cartridges that have had their FMJ bullets pulled...... Then if you bought ten or fifteen cases and worked up a good bullet you might have something.

Lotta money lotta effort.

Or just stop at Wally world on the way to work occassionally and occassionally spend some time doing a little reloading.

Have fun and shoot safe,

You can probably find a good used Chinese made AK semi auto in 5.56, they imported a bunch of them in the 80's.
I don't by PRC stuff any more due to their use of slave labor and suspect metalurgy but the Chi Com 5.56 I fired a few times back then seemed no worse in quality than the average military AK. Of course European and some Egyptian AKMs I've seen are pretty well made guns.
Last I heard Poland was dumping Soviet era weaponry cheap.

There are so many AKs in 7.62X39 that they are very inexpensive...yes, some are even cheap. I went with the traditional caliber.

MD Willington, yea thats the shipment a buyer had stranded off the eastern seaboard trying to get an importer to get it in country after his other importer could not get a form 6 approved, It was posted all over the net while the guy was trying to get another of the bigger importers to help him out, nobody wanted to touch the deal then the entire shipment was purchased by a VERY large importer at a loss to the original buyer, Rumer was that it would be parked in a "friendly" country until that importer could convince the BATF to approve the form 6 for it to actually clear customs........ guessin we now know "who" bought it, now lets see if they can actually get it in country past US customs........ keep your fingers crossed cause thats some really great ammo, and before anyone asks yes its corrosive primed as is all the best ammo :) That stuff is accurate as h#ll and super reliable....
