My WMs have been selling a Russian-made 7.62 x 39 ammo, 122 gr FMJ recently for $5/20 rounds. It comes in a white box and says "hunting ammo" or something, "Made in Russia." Berdan-primed, non-corrosive. I can't tell who makes it from the box. Has anyone tried it, and what was your experience? Thanks

My oldest gave me 2 boxes--let you know next spring

Looks like Tula. I've never had issues with any steel cased Russian ammo, .223 or 7.62x39. $5 a box is pretty pricey though, you'll find it cheaper on the interwebs.

On price, if you figure that you would pay shipping on a case of ammo, the price isnt bad a 5.00 for 20. (.25 each / 250 per 1000)

The real break here is a decent price without having to buy a case at a time. You may "over pay" 30.00 by the time you buy a case quantity, I'll be on the look out at wally world for some of this.

It cycled and fired through my Bulgarian Arsenal fine. But I only tried one box though since I was just hesitant as you when I found it at Walmart.

You shouldn't have any issues I have been using it in my AK (7.62x39), and Mosin Nagant (7.62x54R) for awhile and have not had one issue. As to the origion of the ammo the box & backstamp has the Ulyanovsk stamp on it. If memory serves and don't quote me but I do believe the Ulyanovsk Machine--Tool factory has produced many of the russian commercial brands like Brown Bear, and Wolf(Tula), typically under some type of contract outsourced deal.--- No problems with mine so have fun.

Keep in mind though, if it is indeed the 122gr."FMJ" loads don't use that for hunting, even if it say's "Hunting" on it which if I remember it does say that on the box. My suggestion for hunting with the 7.62x39mm is going to be either the new Hornady ballistic tip's, Brown/ Silver Bear's, or the Wolf/ Herter's from Cabela's--154gr. "SP" loads. Mabye if anyone else has a good suggestion on hunting 7.62x39mm loads, speak up.

My old russian SKS and my AK both ate it up. A buddy of mine has a draco pistol that likes it a lot, and an AR-47 that shoots it without a hitch.

Most people I run into have largely concerned with quality control. Case and point my own father when he got his first AK-47, he asked me what type of ammo it fired and what kind do I use. Informing him I use russian 122gr. FMJ "Wolf, Brown Bear,etc..etc.."
he said and I quote--"Ain't no way I'm running that foreign crap in my new AK!!!" After I showed him the price of his beloved american offers in 7.62x39mm, he very quickly changed his mind and became very open to the new prospect of using russian ammo. He felt much better after I took him shooting for his first time with it and showed him that it didn't blow up, blow his rifle in half, leave some kind of wierd crap on it & ruin his precious new rifle.(Even though I did warn about cleaning after milsurp. corrosive.)

My closest Walmart no longer carries ANY ammo! And this is in TX of all places.

I haven't found a Wal-Mart here in North Florida that carries it.

In Tallahassee: North Monroe St. Walmart, Appalachee Pkwy Walmart, W. Tennessee St. Walmart, Mahan Walmart

Also Walmart in Crawfordville, Lake City and Gainesville (not sure which one it was I went to in gainesville)

Everytime I see it at any of several Wal-Marts around here, it's gone fast. I'd bet that it's made by the same operations that make the Bear,Wolf,Golden Tiger stuff. I'm sure it's fine.

:)jimmyraythomason: It struck me more than it did you, I reminded my father the dang thing was designed in the USSR & the ammo was designed in the USSR, so what is your problem old man!!!(That is like saying I am going to take an 1873 Colt SAA and not run that dang American brand Blackhills/ Winchester.45 Colt LRN load though it.)

Ulyanovsk, Novisbirsk, Tula, Vympl etc. are the big Russian armaments factory towns that churned out billions if not trillions of rounds each during the cold war. They know how to make ammo, since they are the communist equivalent of Lake City. Now that that is over, they are taking advantage of the free markets and pumping out all sorts of goodies for us capitalist pigs!

Buy it cheap and stack it deep, it works just fine.

Basically the same as Tula. You can get it under $4 a box on-line.

If only buying a little, Walmart is convenient and may be break even factoring in shipping. But except for odd ball calibers I shoot infrequently, I never buy less than 500 rounds at a time.

IME Ulyanovsk Machine makes some of the better Russian ammo.

IIRC the "Bear" ammo is made by Barnaul. I think Barnaul makes the best civi Russian ammo.

Both of these company's ammo is usually loaded to spec.

Tula/Wolff is OK but usually dirty and a bit under powdered.

It works fine, but...

1) Why waste time looking for it, then waiting fifteen minutes for a sales clerk each time you want a few boxes? I waited that long, then picked up the store's pager and made a p.a., to summon staff. Formalities never stop me from using initiative, but why is this required?

2) As it would have cost me about $30 or so extra for 1,000 rds. with local sales tax, I ordered a case of nice jhp from Ammoman
($220 total, With shipping), which arrived two days ago.

Even with shipping from NJ to Memphis, this beats Walmart's price + 9% tax. But on the other hand, it is only money.
