I was in Wal Mart today and came across some ammo for my sks. The shelf label indicated it was "Tula" ammo however the label on the box read like this.
Open-End Joined-Stock Company "The Ulyanovsk Cartridges Works". I'm sure Wal Mart didn't pull "Tula" out of thin air so it probably is correct. The stuff is 122 grn, fmj, steel cased, berdan primed and non corrosive. The best part was the price which was 4.97 a box. Have any of you used this stuff and do you know anything about it? I used to buy the Monarch at Academy at about 5.50 a box but they haven't had it for months now.

It's pretty dirty chow for rifles(not corrosive, mind you...), but it shoots. Don't expect it to drive tacks, but it cycled just fine in both my WASR and SKS. Seems below wolf quality to me, but hey, it is cheap.

Works well for me in both 7.62x39 and 5.56x45, I've been getting it from Cheaper-Than-Dirt for $190/1000.

I don't find a lick of difference in general among the Russian steel cased ammo. Some lots are better than others. I buy whatever has the best price.

Tula and Ulyanovsk are factories that recently started selling their own ammo. Wolf, Brown/Silver/Golden Bear are dealers who get stuff made with their own packaging. So Tula or Uly could be Wolf, but Tula is not Uly.

I've used pretty much all of it and as Wally said "I don't find a lick of difference in general among the Russian steel cased ammo. Some lots are better than others. I buy whatever has the best price."

At the end of the day it is all Mil-spec ammo, made at the commie equivalent of Lake City.

I heard that it is special second-run ammunition that functions best in the special second-run firearms all the manufacturers make specifically for Wal-Mart.

My buddies friend whose brother is a Navy Seal told him.

:)

Those are pretty good prices. Thanks for the tip.

That's all I've been shooting lately and other than the very occasional failure to fire, it runs fine.
