7.62x39 ammo pricing and my bucket of change.

From the handy dandy Federal Reserve Inflation Calculator:

If in <1991> (year)
I bought goods or services for $<75> ,
then in <2006> (year)
the same goods or services would cost $ 111.07

Tends to run on the conservative (cheaper/lower) end of final adjusted cost.

I would have to agree with Coronach.

In other words, the current "inflated" prices could just be the result of a correction in the market, and more accurately reflect what the stuff "should" cost.

Slow down on shooting, aim accurately, hit the target.

And reread my earlier post about "normal" prices. I'm not sure that the "good old days" of 7.62x39 were very normal.
Compare that with the huge numbers of Yugo SKS and the huge numbers of AK parts kits that have hit the US shores for the last 5 or 6 years, it makes a lot of sense to me.

The days of the $60-70 cases of 7.62x39 are over folks. You should have thought about stocking up then.

I just wonder what ever happened to Barnual 7.62x39. I love that ammo. You can't find it for sale by the case anywhere. It's like S&B 7.62x39. Just gone.

I'm paying $5.00/.25 a box ($250.00 for 1,000) for .223 Brass Remington UMC FMJ at the local Sporting goods superstore here. It's the cheapest in the entire area. Now, 7.62x39 is $12.00/.60 a box or more for the FMJ brass and is $2.80/.14 a box ($140.00 for 1000) for Brown bear. These prices are alright with me. Brass .223 for that price is pretty good and 7.62 from Barnaul at that price is pretty good for me.

At this point in my life, I don't go to the range every weekend anymore to burn through 200+ rounds like I used to. I'm buying to stock up for the future now. I go twice a month and shoot a couple of boxes through each weapon I bring. These days I tend to take timed accurate shots anyhow, and try to improve my groupings every time. Being married with children has put a damper on ammo funds.

That's a pretty decent price for Brown Bear. I've been buying the Guat 5.56 at AIM. Right now it's at 6.60 per 30. It's clean and M193-spec. Once it dries up I'm probably just gonna' buy components and start reloading my Remington brass.

Really, I cannot see why 7.62x39 was ever as cheap as it was, besides a major supply surplus. If you think about it, production costs of the ammo should not be that dissimilar to 7.62 NATO or .30-06, both of which are always significantly more spendy than 7.62 Russian, even when made by the same manufacturer.

On the plus side, if we start reloading for 7.62 Russian, I wonder what will happen to our group sizes? ;)

I simply refuse to buy 7.62x39mm at the going rate. I reload it now and it is cheaper if you stay away from name brand makers of bullets or cast your own from linotype!
