7.62x39 AR

I just had to order one of the Biden AR-14 lowers. I'm thinking of building a 7.62x39 AR on it. Are there any gotchas I should be aware of?

Thanks.

Get a spare bolt (it can be stripped) because the cartridge head is bigger and thus the surrounding metal in the bolt gets thinner. Ditto for extractors if you plan on using steel cased ammo.
Get one of these extended firing pins for the bolt if you want to fire hard primered Russki surplus-avoids using heavier springs instead. https://www.blackriflearms.com/AR-15-762x39-Enhanced-Firing-Pin_p_9.html Use a regular pin on soft reloadable commercial ammo.
Magazines, ten round mags of even generic steel ones work pretty well including Midway's Stoner brand often available cheap, the longer higher cap mags, ASC or C-Products are good but C-Products has a somewhat better overall rep for being trouble free. CDNN had them for good prices in the shorter versions and sometimes the hicaps are in stock. https://www.cdnnsports.com/magazines.html#brand=AR&caliber=7.62X39
Never tried the polymer types nor used grendel magazine with the 7.62x39 or the reverse. I think that the followers are different and the feed lips might not feed consistently in the mags. Others will probably know more.

PSA also makes an AR receiver that takes AK mags. Primary Arms is another place to get 7.62x39 stuff and Brownells had faxon barrels for this cartridge that a lot of people like. Mine has a blaster quality barrel because I use cheap ammo in it to simply keep shooting during ammo crunches.

Thanks!

I've got a ton of steel cased ammo in that cartridge. That's one of the reasons I'm going to do the build.

One thing to mention is also that if you have too light of a hammer spring it may not have enough "oomph" to set off harder Russian primers. The already mentioned enhanced firing pin will help with that though. Magazines I've had perfect reliability with ASC 7.62x39 10 round mags. Also don't be surprised with the accuracy you can achieve if you feed it quality ammo. My cheap AR Stoner 7.62x39 upper from MidwayUSA is a sleeper of an accurate rifle with my reloads and Federal Fusion ammo.

Ditto on what boom boom said. I put one together earlier this year and added an enhanced bolt and firing pin from Black Rifle Arms. I used an AR-STONER parts kit from MidwayUSA. The other two items I swapped out from the kit were the buffer (came w/standard weight and added an H3 buffer) and an ambidextrous selector since I'm a southpaw.

I'm using 20 round C-Products mags in it. The red dot sight is a Holosun and the BUIS is a cheap but decent NCStar I also got from Midway.

Lower is an Anderson that I picked up locally. It was the same price for the one with the Gadsden logo as a plain one, so I got fancy. :)

This is my first AR-15 not in 5.56mm. The recoil impulse is similar to an AKM but sharper due to the DI gas vs. the AK's long-stroke system.

I also have an AR Stoner 7.62 upper from Midway. It is mated to a PSA standard 223 AR lower. As it is, it shoots all the steel cased stuff just fine. (no massaging necessary with any special pins or springs.)
Just purchased a Bear Creek Arsenal complete 16" upper in 7.62 but have not tested it out due to the weather. This one also is hooked to a standard PSA lower. I expect no trouble with this upper as it was fully assembled with the right parts to start with.

All good info above. I've had good luck with x39 enhanced firing pins from Red X, also their spare "complete" bolts are $25 each. I picked up a couple about a month ago. Nice to have on hand, except they have a tendency to turn into complete rifles. LOL

All of the above are in the same ballpark as anything I could add....AR Stoner 16” upper, Aero lower, Black Rifle enhanced firing pin & C-products 10-round mags have all been 100% reliable for me. (I’m in Ca so 10 is the max with this gun.)

They're fun to shoot! A touch more recoil and a bit harder slap on the metal plates has been my experience.

Let us know how it turns out and how it shoots for you

Stay safe.

I also run the ar stoner set up and run the steel case ammo, mine deffinately prefers the non varnishes stuff. Like Carjunkie stated with reloads my group size shrinks in half. I have had to adjust the mag lips to get mine to feed reliably on every brand mag. I free floated my barrel and upgraded my trigger. The trigger makes a big difference. Over all, my ar in this caliber is my most fun gun to shoot of any of my guns.
