7.62x39 for deer and hogs?

i can't hunt with a rifle where i am from in upstate NY, but i would say a decent soft point would do well by you.
not sure how it would react on game, but brown bear SP actually seems to expand. . . .it's pretty cheap, but i've used it on groundhogs in a 223 and it opened them up.

The 7.62x39 is a fine round for white tail deer as I have taken one. The deer dropped like a sack of rocks. It should be fine for hogs too. Your maximum range is going to depend on your ability to deliver an accurate shot. The 7.62x39 round is able to reach out to 200 yds no doubt. Most deer and hogs are shot fairly close range so just get some trigger time and know your limits before you hit the woods.

Sure the 7.62x39 would be fine, as long as you're using a quality soft point hunting round.

use a quality hunting cartridge. the winchester is good, the cor-bon is better.
range? depends on the gun. for me, the maximum range i can hit a 4x4 block of wood. the round is good to 200 or more yards with quality ammo.
i have an unissued grade yugo SKS that i scoped and upgraded (legally). it's good to about 75 yards. many of the guns chambered in 7.62x39 don't do the cartridge justice. for my next rifle purchase i'm considering one of the CZ bolt action 7.62x39 rifles.

Good for deer out to a reasonable range...I personally wouldn't go more than 100 yds or a bit more, mostly because of accuracy considerations. But for "brush hunting" it's a great cartridge, assuming you use good hunting style bullet.
Having talked to some people that have done alot of hog(boar) hunting, however its MAY be a bit marginal. Many people have used it to good effect on hogs up to 200 lbs or so. But I've also heard from many, that without REALLY precise shot placement, it's kinda iffy. I plan on going on a boar hunt in the spring, where most boar are 150-200 lbs, but some may go 400 lbs. My friends (who've been there before) have convinced me to take "Thumper", a sporterized Mauser (VZ-24) in 8mm-06 AI----just "in case"...I'm disabled and can't move so fast, so I need to make sure I make every shot count, if I encounter a really large boar.
