7.62x39 plinking load

Would 2400 be at an advantage over 1680 for just plinking when loading
7.62x39? I'm still new to reloading, but it seems that smaller charges (economical) and lower velocities (ejection keeping brass nearby?) would be handy.

I'll probably end up working up both 1680 and 2400, but was wondering if I was on the right track. Does anyone load 2 types of rounds for their SKS/AK? Say one for plinking and one for hunting/SHTF/defense/etc?

I suppose it would work, but you will probably have a single-shot SKS/AK.

They are both gas-operated rifles, and need a somewhat similiar burn rate powder & operating pressure as the full-power load to work the action.

I would suggest you forget about saving two cents a round on powder and use the right stuff.

I've used the Lee 155 gr Cast Gas Check bullet with 2400, and the rifles cycle.

I have a Mini30 and don't use 2400 so can't directly answer your que but I do load 'plinking' rounds with the Win. .310 dia. 123 gr. slug or the Rem. the same. I use Lee's low-end data for 1680. installed a heavy recoil spring and the low-end loads cycle OK. cases drop close by, few FTE's.
and I do load my 'custom' stuff also.

I've been reloading for an SKS for 2 yr's now. I load a 115 gr. Lyman 311359 gas check with the following loads: 18 grs IMR 4227, or 24 grs Hodgen, or 17 grs SR4759. Have the best results with 4759. No problem with cycling and accurant enough for plinging 1 1/2 in. at 50 yds. At last count well over 1000rds and no problem with lead in gas chamber or piston not being free.

What rifle are you using?

If it's an SKS you can simply remove the gas piston to turn your gun into a straight pull bolt action. Works great to save wear and tear on your brass.

It's an AK... but a Yugo! So I still have the bolt-action option when necessary. I'm thinking about cutting down the grenade sight into just a lever.
