7.62x39 vs 243

If I were going to shoot 7.62x39 as a serious hunting rifle from a bolt gun, I'd have a .308 bore barrel built for it so I'd have a decent variety of bullets to choose from. There simply ain't much in ..311". The 7.62x39 is the case a lot of PPC rounds are based on. It's a very efficient round and should be quite accurate in a bolt rifle built for it and with a decent bullet. However, the .243 will shoot and kill deer to 300 yards and 200 is stretching the 7.62x39.

Unless you just WANT the Russian round and would be willing to have it custom barreled, the obvious answer is .243 IMHO.

Armoredman, I have a Leupold Gilmore 1-inch red dot with 4moa dot. I mount it on the CZ527 sometimes for offhand shooting at 100 yards. The gun will stay on a 4-inch steel plate all day long offhand with that red dot on it. These little carbines are awesome inside 200yrds. Put a dot sight on yours. You will like it.

Well, I got my Picatinny rail adapter, very nice piece of hardware, and I mounted the only unoccupied optic I had left, a loaner C-More Railway sight.

That looks...odd. BUT, in keeping with my idea as a camp rifle, it would be appropriate, sort of, would still prefer the 2-7 scope.

I think I will give this a shot, as it were...:)

armoredman, I just threw up a little bit in my mouth; yep, I think the 2-7x would be a bit better, and look a great deal better. ;)

Yes, if I had one...no $ for a scope right now, and if you look at that groove in the barrel, that's where the rear sight was, it came out, so this is the only way I'll be able to shoot this carbine until I do get a scope.

243 is the absolutely the choice -- many more bullet choices give it a much broader applicability... coyote to deer is it's sweetspot.
