I got a new supposedly unissued Finnish M39. I'm thinking of 52.0 gr. IMR 4350 in Winchester brass, Winchester standard primers and .311 dia 174 gr. Sierra MK bullets. What say you guys?

I shoot Russian surplus out of my rifle.( Russian M38) I've had no problem at all with it. I'm comfortable iron sighting it at 150yrds. I shoot mine every chance I get thus the cheap ammo. 440 rnds for $105 and some jingle out the door.
There's nothing wrong at all with your chosen ammo by no means. I suggest what I use because I shoot mine ALL OF THE TIME. It's accurate too. That's just my suggestion.

Personally, I use 4350 with 165gr and heavier bullets in the 30-06. (7.62X63) I see no reason why 4350 wont work well with a 174gr bullet in the 7.62X54R. I wouldn't use it with bullets as light as 147gr or 150gr though.

I have no interest in shooting surplus ammo. Been there done that with every type one can buy. It is not very accurate but I suppose accuracy is a relative term.
I guess more to the point is my loading manuals list only .308 dia. 175 gr. bullet loads. And of course one of the powders listed is Imr 4350 with a max load of like 53.6 gr. With like only 52.0 gr the powder is almost to the top of the case and with a .003 in. (.311) larger bullet I can imagine that the pressure can only go up, perhaps way up.
So does anybody have a listing for IMR 4350 using a 174 gr., .311 Sierra MK bullet? Using the % of case volumn method I think like 49 gr. should be good. What say you guys? :scrutiny:

I say if your looking for really good accuracy with IMR4350, then you might think about trying the Lyman accuracy loads. With 174gr rounds they list 52.5, but be advised this is a max listing. Also this is not matched with the 174 Sierra MK, but a Hornady roundnose bullet. I have not tried this particular load.

I have though used the listing for 180gr Sierra ProHunter with 47.5gr. of IMR4350. It works very well. Best group to date was 1.75inches, 10 shots @ 100 yards. It is on the lower end of the velocity spectrum for x54r, but it is quite accurate. I used this combo in a match and it did very well.

Back to the SierraMK 174gr. - 50gr of AA4350 and an OAL of 3.00" works very well.

This is all for .311 or .312 (Hornady) dia. bullets, which is all I shoot.

Went back and looked thorugh my notes. I have in fact tested a x54r loading with 52.5gr of IMR4350, with a 174gr Hornady FMJ/BT. Similar, but the not the same as the SierraMK HPBT. Five shots at 100 yards hit just a hair over 1.75 inches. This is the only test of that combo I have done, and just the one time, but it looks promising.
