Are you sure the bolt is actually chrome and not just "in the white" (i.e. Is bare polished metal with no protective finish)

I never saw or heard of the Nips chrome plating Arisaka bolts. Bores, yes.
Maybe done to pretty up a souvenir, as was common when war surplus meant cheap, not "collector's item."

Never seen a factory original Arisaka chromed bolt. Most likely a previous owner took the bolt to a plating company.

Forty years ago there used to be chrome/nickel plating shops all over the place. I remember one in a residental area, I took a sword hilt there to be plated. Cost was $5.00. Well EPA and OSHA rules elimanted the little shops. But long ago, it was easy to get something chromed. And cheap. And I suspect someone wanted a shiny bolt, and they took it to the neighborhood plating shop.

jim I am not sure that is a good idea.
thats kind of like calling the bully out.
my grand dad, Korea, and wwII
my dad, nam air cav
my best friend ranger simora.
I think a derogatory term is an invitation for a fight.
lets just be nice to each other and just be people.

Hey, Spiggy, the Jap who carried that Arisaka was an enemy of my country in my parents' day, and I used a derogatory term intentionally.

So you think its right to continue to refer to them in that way? Hate to brake it to you but the war's been over for more than 50 years. My Grandfather landed on Okinawa and fought the Japanese, they were the enemy then, but it doesn't mean I consider them the enemy now.

Calling people "Japs" and "Nips" is pretty derogatory if you ask me, we don't live in the 1940's anymore. I have a good friend who is Japanese and I would never refer to him or any other Japanese person in that way.

Sorry to stray from topic, anyway.....

That certainly does look like chrome, either that or its steel and someone really polished the heck out of it. Its possible I suppose that someone could have chromed it, have you tested it with a magnet to see if it has any magnetic properties, obviously if its magnetic its not solid chrome.

Does it look like any other part of the rifle has had any custom work done to it?

That bolt is far from original. I've seen some custom mosin jobs with chromed metal, and a few other milsurps, but in every case, it was a custom shop job of some sort. That bolt looks really nice, I might add.

Jim: Last time I checked, this was the high road, not a KKK website. If you know it's a derogatory racial slur, then you know better than to use it on THR. If you have a problem with that, ask a moderator. They don't take kindly to racial slurs of any type around these parts. With a post count as high as yours, you should know that by now. A basic rule of thumb: If your mother would (or should) have washed out your mouth with soap for saying it, it probably doesn't belong on THR.

For the record: There are (and were back then) quite a few patriotic Americans of Japanese descent. One is a U.S. senator. He gave his right arm for this country, and he tended the wounded at Pearl Harbor. He has said on at least one other occasion that he'd be willing to give his other arm for his country. He was a platoon leader in the 442nd regimental combat team. If you really feel the way you do, why don't you go to his office in Washington or Honolulu and call him one of those names and see what kind of response you get. How many body parts have you given for your country lately?

There are a lot of us, and we don't take kindly to that kind of talk either. You have free speech, even hate speech, rights in this country. That doesn't mean that it's "ok".

If you haven't read that, you should, at least if you intend to do any posting on THR.

I am sorry to have offended so many sensitive modern souls.

I will only comment to fireflyfather that I can tell and appreciate the difference between a member of the Nisei Brigade with an M1 and a trooper of the Imperial Japanese Army with an Arisaka, even though they are of the same racial stock.

And even I would not post what my Mother called an Axis soldier or citizen.

Jim: I usually let those kinds of comments slide. It's usually not worth it, but when people *defend* the use of those kinds of terms while we're trying to keep it high road, I don't just sit idly by. I don't like it for its own sake, and I certainly don't like it here on THR when it makes us *all* look bad.

The terms "Jap" and "Nip" came to mean anyone who looked Asian. Even the word "Mongol" came to national use as a broad term for any asian with dark skin.

which is smart because we all know IJA soldiers spoke english and understood exactly what that meant. If you ask a new Issie, they wouldn't have a clue as to what you mean. Those slurs were used directly so that it can only be offensive to integrated immigrants and citizens.

Back to original subject though

Sweetkicker, the bolt you have looks polished, which seems to be a common bubba-job alongside the bent bolts.

During 1989 when the bill that eventually became the California AWB was introduced pretty much the same bill was offered in FLorida and recieved much media support. The FLorida Legislator that offered the bil happened to be my representative who during the campaign expressed his strong support for the RKBA. When he introduced a bill to ban COlt Sporter 1 and such rifles I got a bit peeved.

Obtaining the two bills and proposal I compared them and found intire sections to be copies of one another. WHen I called the Fl reps office to ask what the source of the bill was I was told it was an original document produced by Representative Flagg's office.

Being lied to TWICE really pisses me off.

I ended up being one of the TWO private citizens allowed to speak before the FLorida House Criminal Justice Committee. The CHair of the COmmittee told me that the bill was a done deal and that I was wasting my time for he had the committee votes to turn it back over to the full house "in his pocket"

I stayed for the first day and watched as the only speaker for the 2nd Ammendment was an out of state NRA representative sent down from DC and he was only allowed 15 minutes of two hours, the rest of the time being taken up by antis. I attened the next session and this trend was repeated with Marion Hammer (Unified Sportsmen of FLorida and later NRA Prez) got the 15 minut pro talkat the end of the first hour and 45 minutes anti time.

At this meeting someone placed a pamphlet on the information table and it showed "Assault Weapons" Just pictures and names and among them was a Mini-14.

There after there was a discussion between me and the person responsible for the infor mation table about whether 1. any one could place things on the table and 2. who put that pamphlet on the table.

At a third meeting I was allowed sto speak and I used three minutes. I was then told i needed to stay at the podium so I could be asked some questions.

Actually the first question was "Are you a member of the NRA?"

I then spoke for less than two minutes, the Female Rep asking the question ran to the ladies room.

As the COmmitte Chair was not in the room the chair decided he needed to talk to me. This Black Representative expressed concerns about my responses to the Female rep and we had a few minutes conversation about Civil Rights.

All I know is that when the vote did occur the Black representative that the Chair had so trusted to vote his way did not and in FLorida the Bill failled in Committee.

So some folks have called the Mini-14 an Assualt Weapon since at least 1989.

BTW in the midist of this the Govenor that supported the ban was found to have his "Turkey Gun" in for repair in a local gunshop. Can you say stainless Mini with scope, folding stock, and cammo job?

I know an older lady living in Selma Al. who is still pissed off at the "Japs" (they bombed Pearl Harbor, remember?) and the "Yankees" (They started a bonfire in the middle of her home to burn it down) She has no problem with todays Japanese people or todays northern citizens of this US of A. When she cusses those from the past, those are the only people she means. I believe that is all Jim did and we should just get over it.

Is it a smooth action or is it really tuff? looks nice though. How hard is it to find 7.7mm ammo for it?

Could someone explain why jap is derogative to the Japanese? I just thought it was slang for the people like Brits is for the British and yanks is for the Americans. Irwin
