Can anyone suggest a powder and load for a 139 grain 7mm mag round using large rifle primers? Having trouble finding magnum primers and Ive heard that supplementing the regular primer for the magnum is doable for this round. Currently I have RL-22 and IMR3031. Thanks!

First, IMR 3031 is too fast of a powder to be well suited to the 7mm Rem Mag. Go with the RL-22.

I have used the Winchester WLR with RL-22 and 160g bullets in the 7mm RM with good success. The WLR has a reputation for being the hottest standard rifle primer though, so IMO it's the most suitable replacement for a large rifle mag primer.

I haven't tested this load, but an older Alliant Manual lists:
Remington 9 1/2 Magnum primer
3.275" min OAL
Hornady 139g SP
70.0g RL-22 MAX (So start at 63.0g and work up, watching for pressure signs)

The claimed velocity and pressure in a 24" barrel was 3,295 fps @ 58,000 psi. Starting with the min load, you could swap out the primer with what you have and work up and see how it goes.

Good luck.

I agree.

Don't even get the IMR-3031 too close to a 7mm mag case! :D

The Reloader-22 is a stick type powder and should light off O.K. with standard primers.

Where you to switch to ball powder sometime down the road, you will want to use Mag primers.

Hmmm, looking at the 2009 Alliant manual shows a charge reduction from the older data (I believe the data above is from 2003, but I can't find a copyright date anywhere).

66.0g Reloder 22 MAX (so a starting load would be 59.4g)
Speer 140 gr SP
CCI 250 primer
Remington case
3.28 min OAL
3,074 fps

With a claimed velocity of nearly 3,300 fps on the older data it may be on the warm side. The 2009 data is probably more in line with what you should use.

I would think that rl 19 would give a better burn for the lighter bullet. I used 19 for mine with bullets from barnes 120gr to hornady 154 interlock and they all where damn good accurate loads.

IMR 4831 or IMR 4350 or Accurate powder of the same numbers, do not need a mag primer. A regular LR will light these of with no problems. These are the classic powders for the 7mm Rem with any bullet weight and will give you top velocity with a full case.

R22 is great for 7mm Mag with 120-162gr bullets(all I have tried).

Save the 3031 for 30-30 loads.

Non-magnum LR primers give me better accuracy here in Texas than the magnums.

I keep the 139gr SST around 3000-3100 fps, but they can be beefed up to 3250fps or more with R22.

If you are shooting 3 5-shot groups and start with min load and work up to maximum, in .3 or .5gr increments, you are going to have a very sore shoulder. I would make 3-shot groups from min charge and work up in .5gr incrments to make about 30 rounds. Shoot those and see how they do.

A lot of outlandish opinions/attitudes are developing among some of the old timers here that should know better.........

Lee #2 Gives the following data for the 120 and 150gr bullets. It's no great feat to extrapolate numbers for the 139-140gr bullets. Just consider the max for the 150's to apply equally to the 140's and you'll be safe.

Just remember to visually inspect each case to verify powder levels.

BTW; these numbers are about what I get with my 7mm08 with more than 10gr less powder.......Just thought you'd like to know.....

IMR3031 powder-
120gr Bullet: start- 46.9gr @2,833 ; MAX- 52.5 @ 3,180fps pg.389
150gr Bullet: start- 44.9gr @2,541 ; MAX- 51.0 @ 2,850fps pg.391

From Lee#2; extracted from IMR Powder Manual, circa 2002 by Lee....

I've gotten superior results from the 7mmRemMag with RL22. Perhaps the best powder for this rifle. I liked 67.5gr with 140gr Sierra BTSP GameKing for near 3,200fps. Friend killed a 170 class whitetail at lased 440yds with this load in 2001 with his Savage M110 in 7mmRemMag and my loads.....
