I have a Lee XLR priming tool. I'm currently attempting to load 7mm mag rounds. Seems like the magnum primer won't feed into the priming tool because they're too thick. Does the lee primer only work with large/small rifle/pistol primers? What would I use to prime with magnum primers?

i have a lee tool, is yours the one with the little spring loaded ram. If so there is another pin, spring and primer housing that interchanges for the larger primers. The magnum and large rifle primers are the same size.

Magnum primers have nothing to do with the cartridge name. They're about the powder used. They burn a bit hotter for a bit longer and are for lighting hard to ignite powders and cold weather shooting. You don't need 'em if your manual doesn't call for 'em for a particular powder. Doesn't hurt anything if you do use 'em though.
Like pat86323 says, regular large rifle and magnum primers are the same size. Sounds like you may have the small rifle/pistol cup installed.

Primers??

All Large primers have the same DIAMETER. Large rifle(Std.+Mag.)have a DEEPER cup, than Large pistol primers. Small primers(Rifle+Pistol) are the same diameter and the same height primer cups.
You can interchange SMALL primers in rifle+pistol, at times, with certain loads, though it is NOT advisable to use small pistol primers in small rifle loads, due to the weaker primer cup in the small pistol primer.:uhoh:

Not to state the obvious but your priming tool should have come with large and small primer trays and rams. The small primer tray won't work with large primers.

I'm not sure how the current Lee primer tool is marked but the previous version has an "L" or and "S" cast into the bottom of the tray for identification.

I guess another thing to look for is there any flash in your large primer tray that may be restricting feeding of the primers. Except for cleaning up flash, i would not make any modifications to the primer tray.

As previous said, the diameter of large primers is the same regardless of what they are designed for. They should work in your priming tool.

If you cannot identify a problem, contact Lee Precision.

Hope this helps.

The trays are marked on the bottom "large primer" or "small primer." I have the magnum primers in the "large primer" tray. The pin/spring doesn't seem to go down far enough to allow the primers to go into the feeder. I took it apart and it doesn't look like there's any allowance for adjustment. I tried another "large" tray and it's the same. Just thought maybe the primer was thicker. Maybe I got a bad batch of trays. I ended up putting them in the hole where the cartridge holder is and doing it by hand. Got the job done that way but very tedius. Anyone have an experience with the Ram Prime that screws into the loader?

The tip on the priming tool. Make sure it is the one for large. rifle / pistol. It is an easy mistake to make and will cause you to pull hair out trying to figure it out. The little cup is smaller on the small one, and will not fit around a large pistol/rifle primer.

BigN,
I have the new Lee hand primer and have used it for LR Magnum primers and it works perfectly. It's possible you have a defective priming tool on your hands. You probably need to return it for one that's working properly.
