See http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=714095 for the previous discussion on barrel profile and stocks/DBM setups regarding my precision rifle project.

I purchased the 700 ADL with a 26 in light profile barrel. I got it home and immediately dropped it into the B and C stock. It was difficult to insert, and while I didn't use a vice or mallet, I did have to really push to get the action and barrel to drop in. When I did, I saw that the barrel did not lie straight in the barrel channel. The previous owner of the stock had a heavier profile barrel, and it is obvious in these pictures. (my first time with pics here, hopefully they attached). I removed and reinserted the action and retightened the screws several times in hopes of it being fixed, but everytime it did the same thing.

I was a little perturbed at the obviously crooked barrel in the barrel channel, and initially thought that the free floating aspect of the stock was just exposing a flaw that would have been otherwise unknown in the factory plastic stock (which was definitely not free floating). I had one person tell me that the barrel just wasn't trued to the action and that was all that was wrong.

I had someone else I trust more put me in touch with a local gunsmith. He looked down in the stock and found the remnants of a poor bedding job, and due to leftover epoxy still being in the way of the recoil lug, the action was skewed as it sat in the stock. He also offered to change out the very lightweight barrel it came with for a heavy Sendero/Varmint profile barrel that is very lightly used, and bed and true the action for 200 dollars. I took him up on his offer. I will post pics once I receive the new barrel and my rifle back.

Yet to go: bipod, rail, rings, and glass.

Question: I have read really great things about Larue's rails, rings, and mounts as far as tolerances, and being true to spec on rails, etc. Would a LaRue mount/rail do well for this application? Intended distance will go out to 800-1000.

Thanks,

Good deal.

Look at NF 20moa or Leupold 15moa rail and appropriate height rings. Let me know if you decide to buy a new L 15moa rail, I'll cut you a screaming deal on one.

I may take you up on the Leupold. No opinions on a Larue mount and/or rail for a Remington 700?

I think AR mount when I think Larue, but they may have bolt gun suitable mounts I'm not aware of.

There are some one piece R700 mounts out there, but they're beyond what I'm willing to spend on mounts. The 'standard' IMHO would be NF Rail and NF Rings (unless you've got an odd scope tube). Leupold Mk4 is good stuff, I just don't see as many people using them anymore. I've got NF Rail / Rings on most bolt guns. A couple are mix/match w/ EGW (I think that's what it's called) rail / NF rings and one w/ NF Rail / Leupold Alum Rings.

My L rail will give you 15moa up. Run some numbers through a ballistic calc to see if that's enough for what you're looking to do. You might need the extra 5moa up that a NF 20moa would give, depending on load, range and scope adjustability. If you do decide it works, shoot me a pm and I'll make L Potterfield look like a scalper. :)

I have very little scope experience, so I don't have habits formed at this point. Any thoughts on a Vortex 6-24 HS XLR vs a Bushnell 6-24x50 Elite Tactical? I'm am leaning towards some type of Horus reticle. Otherwise I will probably buy a similar range Mil Dot and put the rest into something useful like ammo.
