well... compressing that spring enough to get the pin exposed is difficult, but you can do it w/ a little muscle.
i finally broke down and bought the possum hollow tool. all it does is compresses the spring enough to expose the pin - but it maintains control so after you get it taken apart, there's no fear of flying parts. it is easiest to use it, but short of laying out the $10 or so for it (its the wait, not the money... i know - been there many a time), a block of wood and some determination will substitute just fine.
the pin doesn't fit that tight, relying more on friction from the spring than a tight fit in the hole to hold it in place.
