700 LTR barrel not even in stock.

I noticed last week that the free floating barrel of my LTR is not even in the stock. It's funny, because I hadn't noticed it until after I took it shooting for the first time-- although I'm not saying that had anything to do with it.

There is a much wider gap on the right side than on the left side (when looking down on the top of the gun). Is this normal? Can it affect accuracy? I haven't been able to figure out where the discrepancy begins in the gun. This is not what I would expect from a firearm with this price tag. :(
 
There was a Remington XR-100 that I went to buy and when i looked at the forearm I noticed it was almost wrapping around the barrel like a Twizzler. Not noticeable from a few feet away, but when you looked at the lines it was like, "how can someone sell that?...especially for $750."

Not unusual with factory rifles. It won't hurt anything unless the more narrow gap on the left side causes the barrel to touch on the left when the barrel heats up. If you have the rifle pillar bedded by a good smith, he can fix this problem and your rifle will shoot better also.

If the forearm doesn't touch the barrel, and if the action is evenly bedded, it is only an issue of esthetics and won't affect accuracy. Shoot the rifle and see how it shoots. Most of these rifles are extremely accurate with the right ammo. Mine prefers the 168 grain bullets.
 
How much of a gap are you talking about? If your talking about less than a 1mm difference, you're in the norm for the rifle.

If you barrel is free floating it's and it shoots well I wouldn't mess with it. You can always contact Remington customer service and ask for a replacment stock.

The LTR has an HS precision stock so taking it to a gunsmith for pillar bedding is out of the question.
 
I think I will have a gunnie do the pillar bedding and also work on the trigger--lighten it up a bit.

pcf-- The gap on the right side is a good 1/16" wider- quite noticeable.

Thanks for everyone's input, I really appreciate it. It was starting to nag at me.

I've only taken it on one shooting session, hitting it in the black at 100 yrds. This week or next I will take it to a range and do some fine tuning.
 
I too have an LTR and it too has more room on one side than the other. From talking with others on snipershide.com, this is a common occurrence. Go buy yourself some Federal GMM 168s and shoot it. You will have a big grin on your face when you see how it groups. The barrel on the LTRs are free floated in the HSP stock. Enjoy it...
 
I bought a used ltr in .223. The previous owner opened up the barrel channel so that there was a even amount of space on both sides even though it was free floated, and very accurate. He said it really bugged him, and I got a really good deal on it. mal
