700 LTR

I owned a 700P in .308 which should be very similar to the PSS. It proved to be capable of very good accuracy and it was a fairly large heavy rifle. Several years earlier I owned a 700 VS in .308 and it was at least as accurate as the 700P. With most of my shooting confined to shorter ranges I decided to go with a .223 this time and traded the .308.

The rifle I traded for is a 700LTR in .223. The size of the rifle seems ideally suited to the .223 , at least to me. The barrel is still heavy but 20" and fluted. It has the faster 1 in 9" barrel twist so it should handle some of the heavier bullets like the 69 Sierra match I loaded. I have yet to shoot the rifle , just got it last month. But after handling it I knew I did not want the large 26" barreled 700P version this time. Hopefully it will be a shooter.

Ok - I looked at the link. So you are looking at the LTR in .308. Actually with the .308 I liked having the larger rifle. Still, the LTR even without the extras will probably be a very accurate rifle. I like the 40X trigger. Although I installed a Jewell in mine. Considering that the standard LTR is usually $749 and up the custom LTR might be priced right? I'm no expert there. But in the case of the 3 previous heavy barrel Remingtons I owned they were very accurate even without custom work. It seems that the truing and lapping could only improve things more if done properly.

Buy a regular LTR, and then you get the trigger tuned locally. Shoot the gun! Wear out the barrel, then have the action trued when you rebarrel your gun! You will be money ahead!

Go to this web site, http://ltrdavid.net/, and you will see what kind of results can be had with some good handloads and 308 LTR!

The money you save can be spent on getting a good scope!

I have a 700P in .223.
Bought it for $739 2 years ago.
I shoot it in 200 yd offhand matches throughout the year and do well with it.
The 1x9 twist shoots 53 SMKs and 69 SMKs very well (sub MOA). I had the trigger worked by a local smith and it's down to about 1 1/2 lbs.
The only change I'd make is to install an adjustable butt.
I wouldn't hesitate to get another if the need arose.

The fluted barrel comes and goes. Mine is fluted. When I got mine the dealer said that the non-fluted was a limited production that wasn't going on any more. Now the fluted is the "limited" barrel?

The factory trigger can be tuned with decent results. If you want a really good trigger, get a Jewell. Period.

The action can be hand lapped for less than $5 if you do it yourself.

Short version: Save your money.

I do love the LTR, though.

Thank you very much for the information.
It is very much appreciated from a newbie to the precision rifle ranks.
