Hi,

I just got a Remington 700P LTR in .308. I'm debating what scope I'd like to put on this rifle. It will be mostly a target rifle ranging from 50-1000 yards max but I do hunt occasionally.

Right now I'm looking at Either the Leupold Mark 4 ER/T 4.5-14x50mm M5 with Tactical Milling reticle seen HERE OR the Weaver 3-15x50mm Tactical Model seen HERE.

The scopes are very similar in features, they both have mil reticles with mil turrets. The Weaver has a slightly greater magnification range and a 2-color illuminated reticle whereas the leupold just has a black reticle.

The main difference is cost. The Weaver can be obtained for about $900 whereas the Leupold will be $1500+.

Is the Leupold worth the extra money, and if so, why? I have budgeted about $1750 max for optics on this rifle.

Thanks!

If You have $1750 for optics I would look long and hard at a Night Force in that power range. The glass brightness is noticeably better, the illumination is better and more reliable, the construction more rugged, Warranty equal to Leupold, and big time competitors seem to use Nightforce, US Optics, Premier Reticles and Schmidt and Bender for some odd reason! Nightforce is on the bottom end of that very expensive group but seen just as often in the winner circle. You don't see mny others there, just saying. You owe it to your self to look thru a Night Force , they can be had for $1400 or so.

In the past 35 years I've owned lots of Leupold scopes. Never in that time have I had a problem with any of them. Now 8 years ago I bought 2 Weaver target scopes. They've held up with no problems too. Big difference between 8 and 35 years though.

The only difference I can see is the glass is better on the Leupold compared to Weaver. And I'm a believer in good glass.

Never owned Nightforce or even looked through one of their scopes. I hear they're good but I can't say.

Unless your gonna punish your gear, you won't need a MK4, a VX3 will be just as good, just not as thick a tube. I'm very pleased with my VXIII 8.5-25X50LR, does all I need, rezeros everytime, great glass. The MK4 has a thicker tube for LE & Military punishment, something I dont put my personal equipment through.

On my Rem PSS .308 that is tweaked I have this Nightforce:

with milldots. On my SS 5R .308 I have a Leupold 16x M-1 Mark 4 from a Barrett M83 .50 I sold. Besides the Leupold not having Ill. (which all the Leupold Factory Ill. I've seen wasn't that great.) It also is noticably less bright at twilight as the Night Force set at 15x. Much sharper definition at near dark on the NightForce.Set the power down to 3.5x on the Nightforce and holy cow if there is a moon out at all you can see pretty well, even to 66 year old eyes.
Here you can pick them up for $1600 delivered IMHO. YOU set the budget, this is at the top and you won't be sorry. Spend $1000 on a lesser product you might have remorse!
