I don't think this is a duplicate (despite the homeowner being the same age as the guy who stopped the Subway robbery today)

Homeowner shoots burglar in NE Portland
Posted by The Oregonian June 29, 2007 12:15PM
A burglar was shot by a Northeast Portland homeowner in an early morning incident, Portland police said.

A man, 26, was shot once and has what Sgt. Brian Schmautz described as a life-threatening head injury. Homicide detectives have been called to the scene of the burglary in the area of Northeast 107th and Glisan.

About 4:40 a.m., 9-1-1 dispatchers got a call about a possible intruder in the home. Dispatchers were then told that shots had been fired and that someone was down. When police arrived, they stood outside the home and called for the homeowners to step out. Once inside, police found a critically wounded man in a back enclosure of the home. Police said the home had signs of "forced entry."

Police said a 71-year-old man who lives in the home with his wife fired the shot that wounded the man. The wife made the call to dispatchers, police said.

Police wouldn't identify any one involved in the incident but said the homeowners are cooperating with police. One of the couple's relatives was in the home at the time of the shooting, police said.

A man at the scene identified himself as the son of the homeowners. Walter Hudson identified his parents as Leroy and Janice Hudson.

He said his parents have lived in the home for about 18 months. Walter Hudson received an early morning phone call from his sister about an incident at their parents' home.

Walter Hudson said he didn't know what type or how many guns his father kept in the home. He said he's concerned about his parents' welfare.

"I'm just glad everybody is all right," he said. "I'm very concerned."

Walter Hudson stood across the street as his father was talking to police in front of the home.

A stretch of Glisan is closed this morning because of the investigation.

No other information about the case was immediately available.

Lars Larson (local talk show host) talked to the head of the Portland Police and he said it was a good shoot and they have no intentions of charging the homeowner with anything.

ETA: I think the proper answer to the "what type or how many guns" question should've been "None of your *$&@#$ business". I'm sick of the media portraying decent Americans as possible whackos for preserving their heritage and excercising their rights.

Another 71 year old saves the day!

PORTLAND - An early-morning home invasion ended with a man near death in a local hospital.

Police responded to calls about 4:40 a.m. that an intruder had broken into a home on the 10700 block of Northeast Glisan Street, near 102nd Avenue.

Seventy-one-year-old Leroy Hudson says he heard glass breaking at the back deck door. He went to the rear of the house and met the man as he was trying to get through a doorway to the house. Hudson shot the man in the head.

His wife called 9-1-1. When police they arrived, they found the wounded man nearby. He is now in Legacy Emanuel Hospital, in very grave condition.

Police will not release his name but say they are familiar with him. He is 26 years old, from the Olympia, Washington area, and just two weeks ago, was jailed for disorderly conduct.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Police converged on a home in northeast Portland Friday after a homeowner reportedly shot and injured an intruder.

Police say evidence at the home is consistent with a forced entry and that residents in the home woke up early Friday after hearing breaking glass and someone moving around in an enclosed porch area of the home.

A 71-year-old man in the residence, Leroy Hudson, reportedly fired one shot at the suspected intruder.

The injured suspect, a 26-year-old male, was transported to a local hospital with injuries described as "life threatening." Police said he was shot in the head.

One local resident said he sees "weird people" walking around the area at all hours of the night and is not surprised at the incident.

Oregon law does permit the use of deadly force if a homeowner feels a threat is imminent.

Northeast Glisan Street between 105th and 109th Avenue was closed for several hours while police investigated the incident.

Local news just said it was one shot between the eyes. I'll have to follow this story and see if it's indeed true. They showed a police officer handling the gun on the front porch and it was some kind of 2 or 3 inch revolver. The son also stated on the news he was thankful they had a gun to defend themselves. I was kind of surprised they didn't edit that part out.
