I just bought a steyr pro hunter mountain with a 20 inch barrel for whitetails out of a stand.I'm looking for some good loads for the 140 gr. bullet.I would like to use 4064 because I have it on hand and use it for .22-250, .243, .308, and .30-06 with excellent results.I would like to hear opinions on different powders also though. Thanks,Bryan

Hello Bryan. 4064 (either IMR or Accurate) is one of the better powders for the 7-08 with 139/140's. In most rifles, max is around 43 grains, I've generally found best accuracy at 42 - 42.5 (but, start a few grains lower and work up, etc..). In a 20" barrel, you should see velocities in the 2750 - 2800 FPS range with such loadings.

One note of import regarding the above concerns Nosler B-Tips, Hornady SST's and other "long for weight" bullets. When handoading, these bullets require special care for two reasons:
1. Since they're longer than conventional bullets (like 139 Hdy's/140 Sierra ProHunters/145 Speers, etc..), they must be seated more deeply into the case to get proper OAL. This deep seating reduces the powder capacity, and can run pressures up more quickly.
2. The same bullets have longer bearing surfaces, again increasing the chances for high pressures.
When using the B-Tips and SST's I've found max loads to be around one grain less than with other bullets, so keep that in mind. Your mileage may vary, of course

Other superb 7-08 powders are H380, H414/W760, R15 (using approximately the same weights as 4064), R19 and H4350 (it has shorter grains than IMR 4350, so you can get more in the case).

In the rifles I've worked with, H4350 is the hands-down accuracy/velocity winner with all bullets 145 and up, although a lot of guys report success with H414/W760 (they're the same thing) and R19. I've never been able to get enough R19 in there to generate the velocities H4350 will, although accuracy with R19 is excellent.

Let us know how it works out for you. I've always liked the Steyr Pro Mountain rifles, although I've never gotten around to owning one. Someday...

Typical load data warning here.......

I have used 4064 for my 7mm-08 and have found 42.4 gr is just about perfect with sierra 150 SPBT I can keep them inside of 3" offhand and 1 MOA from a bench in my Win compact Classic model 70.

My limited experience, and extensive experience of friends with 7-08 mirrors esentially what R-West said.

Most use either H414/760 (one) one (all others now) use the H4350.
Actual powder charges vary with different rifles, but all agree on the Sierra 140gr BT-GameKing or Nosler Bal tip.
One rifle prefers the H414 (a 18.5" Rem 788), others the H4350.
All shoot one-hole 5 shot groups at 100yds.

I talked to one of the individuals last year. He has been using the 7-08 since 1982 in a 700BDL varminter (heavy 24" bbl).
He claims he's now up to over 500 deer with only 2 requiring second shots; both were incapacitated with near spine shots, but needed finishing shot. (deer depredation control-with permits- on large estate)
Hard to argue with that kind of success!

I appreciate very much all the help with the new 7-08. I'm going to try some reloads tomorrow and see what works the best.I'll try to post the results. Thanks, again for all the help.Deer season is only a month away, so I can't wait to see what kind of results I get on Deer.
