7mm Remington Mag

Hello guys. I am new to this forum and glad to have found it. Many from what I have noticed seem to know what they are talking about and also I see a strong interest in this great hobby we enjoy. I just purchased a great rifle when Pawn Shop shopping for a friend of mine. Its in 7mm Remington mag and what I would like to know is some of the better loaded ammunition available on the market that you have noticed to be of better quality from the others in reference to accuracy and bullet integrety for Elk and African plains game. really , most mfgrs in the us nowadays, make a very good plain jane soft point or psp point, for north american game, it will do just fine. certainly the ballistic silver tip will do the job. going to africa, i would suggest a bonded core, or nosler partition, or x frame, you will need a bullet over there with with lots of smashing penetration power. Allthough if you do go to Africa, you should make sure that they will let you carry a 7 mag. most outfitters over there will take no less than a 375 .

the best i know of is hornady magnum and hornady custom. probably want to stick w/ 162 grain loadings.

winchester silver box is pretty decent for cheap ammo.

Yup, in 7mm the 160-162gr. loadings seem to have the best trajectory & down range energy.

thanks for the loadings guys. Rangerruck, the 7mm mag is fine. They frown on anything smaller than the 270. I have used the 7mm and 8mm Mauser with great success. All one shot kills from Impala to almost a 1,300 pound Eland. It just depends on what your hunting. Buffalo and Lion they may frown on smaller than a 375 for Buffalo and 338 for Lion.

If you ever get into handloading or can even find someone to assemble some loads for you, try Sierra's 168-gr MKs in this caliber. I've owned three different 7mm rifles over the years (sorely regret having liquidating all 3, too) and the performance of this projectile never failed to just tickle me. In fact, the 7mm Dakota Magnum that I owned was the most accurate rifle I've ever shot. John Geiges of Hollywood, S.C. built it, incidentally. A shooting acquaintance of mine once printed a 10-shot group at 200 yrds with this rifle, using these particular projectiles, that measured only 0.440". That's a sub-0.25 MOA group x 10 shots, mind you! Clearly, this was what competitive shooters refer to as a 'screamer'. Nonetheless, it wouldn't have ever happened with any of the rifles I've owned using any other projectile! And as for your purposes, this bullet will tear the **** out of anything you hit with it, as long as you give it some room (i.e. Sierra MKs are VERY good hunting bullets as long as you don't shoot your game at ranges < 200 yards).
