I have a custom Mauser 98 that I inherited from my dad. On the barrel it says Hoffman 7mm Mag. It chambers and fires the 7mm Remington Mag cartridge. I always assumed that Hoffman was the barrel manufacture. I was sighting in the rifle before deer season and another shooter asked to look at my rifle, which I handed over to him. He told me that it was a 7mm Hoffman mag, predecessor to the 7mm Remington Mag and that I shouldn't fire the Remington Mags in it as there was a slight difference in the cases. I have measured cases fired in this gun vs. new brass and find no irregularitys, thinking that the brass would have fire-formed to the dimension of the chamber if it were indeed different. I asked the gunsmith at the local shop and all that he knew was that Hoffman was a barrel maker. Anyone know anything about the 7mm Hoffman Mag?
