So all I want to do is find some clean entertainment for my family. We've been watching 7th Heaven awhile and although a bit hokey, it's clean so the kids can watch. Then of course I just saw the worst. Below is the jist of it. Reading it back, it doesn't look too bad, but the context of it is the good looking young cop setting the old geezer in his place. The cop held a neighborhood watch to fight some petty crimes going on in the neighborhood. Here's pretty much how it went:

Bob: So besides locking our doors and keeping lights on, what else can we do to keep safe?
Bumbling old geezer: what bob is talking about is guns.
Bob: no I’m not
Bumbling old geezer: well then I am
Cop: I don't recommend any of you getting guns
Bumbling old geezer: why not
Cop: the criminal can use your own gun against you
Bumbling old geezer: when what should we do?
Cop: call the police. We are trained to use guns
Bumbling old geezer: oh, yeah. Wait robber until I call the police
Cop: guns aren’t the answer. Here’s my card. It has my cell number, my pager, and my desk number. Anytime of the day or night call me and I will come running.

(They all look around at the geezer. And give him the "cops are here to protect us because we’re too stupid to do it ourselves" look.)

The email to complain is:
[email protected].

Let 'em have it.

Chill dude, I saw the same show. The program did present an anti-gun bias on behalf of the cop character in the show, but the show did not present an anti-gun bias in and of itself. In fact, I felt the old geezer pretty well made the cop character look pretty stupid via the old geezer's presentation of logic.

You conveniently left out the part of the conversation between the part where the cop suggest people not arm themselves and the part where the cop offers his business phone, home phone, cell phone, and pager numbers. It went something like this...

Cop: the criminal can use your own gun against you

Bumbling old geezer: How is he going to use my gun against me after I shoot him first?

After that point, the cop avoided the question and started handing out business cards with all the numbers on them. He obviously had no manner to counter the geezer's argument.

TV shows present all sorts of perspectives. I saw a show once that showed people robbing a bank, but I would hardly suggest the network or show has a bias against banks or has a bias in favor of bank robbers. The robber characters in the show had those perspectives, but not the show itself.

Just because guns are presented in a less than popular manner by pro grun people does not mean the presentation is anti-gun or represents anti-gun views of the show where the unpopular presentation is made. If you feel you must respond when guns are not presented in a pro-gun light, then you probably need to write to every TV show and network that has ever showed a gun being used in the commission of a crime. This definitely does give a negative impression about guns. Similarly, TV shows with a male actor whose character is that of a rapist really puts males in a negative light, but that does not mean the program is anti-gun, femi-Nazi, or anything of the like. It is just the persona of the character in the story.

Is this the same episode where the Dad gets shot? That one was blatantly obvious.

Ugh.
I just admitted to having sat through an entire episode of '7th Heaven.'
How embarrassing.

:barf:

Ah, yes but you conventienly left out the context.

The old geezer acted like, well, an old geezer who didn't know what he was talking about. He sounded like an idiot, but the cop knew it all. It's the subtle stuff guys. It's why the anti's are winning.

But, you guys are right. 7th Heaven presents all sides and is the best show ever! Am I serious or not? Well, until you are here to hear me say it, you'll never know.

And will I one by one quit watch TV shows who present this way? Yup.

You provided the context just fine. I was using the context you provided an noted that you left out salient information. You thought the geezer looked like a fool and from what I saw, the geezer made the cop look like a fool.

Either way, it is just a character's perspective.

Something tells me you will have to stop watching most shows where guns are used as they are frequently shown in a negative perspective as tools of crime.

Double Naught Spy and others...
I apologize to you for "conveniently" leaving information out. I made a mistake and I can admit that. Did I leave the info out on purpose? Nope. I apologize to you anyway.

Yes, I have a bias against shows that portray gun owners as stupid, old bumbling idiots. I am sorry. I am sorry to all who I asked to email and complain to WB about this. Yes the text of the script makes both arguments. But the subtle overtones were the cop was right and the old gun totin' fool was wrong.

Think about it from the perspective of the person whose mind isn't made up about this issue. I can almost guarantee you they will have taken the side of the cop character. And yes, it's a character. So is Marylin Manson. So are the West Wing characters. So are the characters on ER, yet they testify on health care issues. The black criminals on TV are just characters, yet do they portray blacks in a positive light? Yes they are characters, with different perspectives, I understand that. Many don't.

It took very little time for a couple people to bring down my whole argument. That's fine. You certainly have that right. Half a dozen emails to WB complaining about this may have done wonders. It's why we lose. Where as the anti's are out there off their cans everyday working their anti-gun cause and we argue amongst ourselves.

What would I have to gain by trying to rile up the troops here and fire off a few emails? This is a show where they don't swear, have a tight family unit and generally portray a well rounded squeaky clean family in a positive light. I just think they were misguided in their portrayal of gun owners. It's not like I have a hidden agenda here.

I was volunteering one time with the NRA at a gun show. I was talking to a fellow gun owner and he told me "ah, you’re preachin' to the choir." I asked him when the last time he called or wrote his elected officials is. He said, "I guess I have to start doing that."

Anyway, this argument has gone on too long. It's time to call my senator about the AWB sunset.

Take care all.

Personally, I refuse to watch any television show that threatens to reduce my three remaining braincells to mush.:D

I 'd probably give the credit to the old man gunny. Them young whippersnappers think they always know best. That's why the BG's prey on old folks, because they aren't expecting any resistance.

Maybe another “wholesome†entry from the WB? Set in shall-issue Connecticut, Gilmore Girls—yeah, my wife likes it—seems at least gun neutral. Though guns haven’t actually been used on the show, as far as I know, they have been mentioned several times. In a recent episode, the daughter is beginning college at Yale. The mother laments that according to the campus safety manual, every student needs to carry pepper spray, a whistle, and a “loaded Glock.â€

Ok, that was funny until you mentioned Glock.:D
Think they said "Glock" instead of "gun" since many will not get the Glock reference and those that do think it's funny?:)

Yeah, my wife watches a lot of WB stuff because it's pretty clean. I've seen the Gilmore Girls and it's as corney as the rest of the shows. I pretty much stick to the news for my TV watching, so maybe I was suprised about 7th Heaven deal, but still.
