On the old tang 77's..........

Sometimes the inlet for the tang wasn't right.
Make sure mag body/spacer is not in a bind.
Maybe try free float.

Why on earth would a person rebarrel a long action bolt rifle in a short action chambering?

A friend had a R77 7mm that was not very accurate. Ruger could not improve it in two tries. So now it is a good .280.

I'd have gotten a premium 7x57 barrel to save my dies and brass but he wanted to get completely away from factory.

He reports that its bullets do not bounce off a bull elk as we are warned.

(1) So you can throat the chamber for longer bullets and seat them long and (2) so those longer “short” cartridges will fit in the magazine.

With hindsight, I sometimes wish I had built my .260 Ackley Improved on a long action.
