I overlooked the 7x57

He did not use a 6.5x55. He used a 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer.

Quit nit-picking. They're only different by 1, so they're basically the same thing. :D

I have 2 7x57 rifles, both sporterized military rifles and both are relatively accurate. It's one of my favorite chamberings. One is a Dominican republic carbine that I wish had a 24" barrel instead of 20". I bought it as a donor action, complete with stock, already D&T'd, Dayton-traister trigger, etc. It didn't have a scope and I made the mistake of putting a scope on it. It's a cheap 4-16x40 Centerpoint scope from walmart that gets really dim and blurry above 10x. I took it out, sighted it in and put it through its paces with 139gr PPU factory ammo. It consistently shoots 1.5" 5-shot groups at 100 yards. Not great, but good enough for hunting, especially considering it's a 100-ish year old barrel that started life as a 1908 Brazilian mauser. It shoots about MOA with handloaded 145 gr Speer BTSP and 140 gr Nosler BT.

The other is a 1910 Mexican Small Ring M98. It currently wears a cheap ramline stock, boyds trigger, scope I can't remember off the top of my head, and a 24" barrel. It isn't as accurate as the DomRep, but it's accurate enough. It seems to prefer 120 gr Nosler BTs and doesn't like the 139 PPU ammo like the other one.

I think the 7x57 and it's little brother, the 257 Roberts, are just about the perfect balance of power and ease of use. Recoil isn't bad, but they'll take anything from large deer on down easily. But the same can be said about the 7-08, 260 Rem, 6.5x55, 6.5 CM, etc. I just tend to like the 57mm case length for some reason. :)

Yea you’re right. I mean is a difference of one really that important in the big picture. Of course not. Next time I see 7mm Mauser ammo on sale I’m going to pick some up for my 8mm Mauser.:D

...However, for deer, bigger deer, hogs, big big deer, and black bear, (most hunters will never put their sights on anything outside of these species-categories) the all American .30 cal obsession is amusing when the metrics are more than sufficient. On another continent? Well, they've got their own rules and reasons for them, and I applaud that too, but it further justifies my thought that with the exception of the military and 'Murica, the .30 is just an ugly stepsister trying to fit into a glass slipper.
How many world championships do those "more than sufficient metrics" hold? None. They got their butts kicked twice by that ugly stepsister. I'll take it. You keep the glass slipper.
