The boy was charged with two counts of premeditated murder in the death of his father, 29-year-old Vincent Romero, and 39-year-old Timothy Romans, St. Johns Police Chief Roy Melnick said.

Police arrived at the home within minutes of the shooting Wednesday, Melnick said. They found one victim just outside the front door and the other dead in an upstairs room.

The boy, who prosecutors say had never been in trouble before, initially denied involvement in the shooting but later confessed, Melnick said.

Police have not said what they think the boy's motive was.

Defense attorney Benjamin Brewer argued Friday that police overreached in questioning the boy without representation from a parent or attorney and did not advise him of his rights.

"They became very accusing early on in the interview," Brewer said. "Two officers with guns at their side, it's very scary for anybody, for sure an 8-year-old kid."

A judge determined at a hearing Friday that there was probable cause to believe the boy committed the killings. He is being held at the Apache County juvenile detention center.

St. Johns is a community of about 4,000 people about 170 miles northeast of Phoenix.

Put this together with the idiot who handed his kid (another 8 year old, wasn't it?) a micro-Uzi and the kid promptly shot himself in the head, and it's all prime fodder for the anti-gun crowd. The kid with the Uzi was just tragically stupid. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around an 8 year old committing a double murder, though. I have to imagine that there's more to this story than seen at first blush.

Expect them to be used to push laws demanding gun locks, storing ammo and guns separate/dismantled, though. It's for the children, after all.
How to mitigate it? Man, with these two cases I'm not sure what to say except that they're statistically odd incidences.

I'm actually hoping that it IS a case of false confession... 8 years old, for crying out loud!

Me, too..

Well here in Arizona it's the second case in the last few weeks. In Cochise County a 12 year-old shot his mother to death for no apparent reason.

I have no good answers in either case, mostly because very little information has been released. Obviously the police made a mistake (maybe a big one) by questioning the boy when neither a parent or attorney was present. But on the other side of the coin, his father was dead, his mother was living in another state, and no attorney had been appointed by the court at that time. I can understand why the police were trying to make heads or tails of the situation because when the questioning went on they weren't sure who did the shooting or why.

Will the anti-gun media try to use all of this? Probably, but I suspect they will wait until more information is released. A mis-step could leave them with egg on their face. There must be more to both stories then we are seeing here.

If we really knew anything about the facts of this deal beyond this minimum, it might be worthwhile for discussion. As it is, it's just fodder for speculations and wasted bandwidth.
