I understand that this is a legal way to build your own AR without going through FFL or SN. Is this true and can someone recommend a good source for 80 AR lowers? Any tips on machining or building?

There are 3 types of "80%" AR lowers, depending on which portion is left unfinished: the magazine well, the fire control group recess, or the threaded hole for the buffer tube. (If I were to mess with one of these, I would pick the second type.)

It seems it would be easier just to get a finished lower.

Some people like to work on these as a hobby challenge, but I suspect that more people go that route just to fly under the radar. I'm not that paranoid (yet).

rcmodel is correct. Those are now non-guns; making them guns (i.e., finishing them) can be done legally only by you or by a licensed manufacturer. An ordinary gunsmith may not do it and if you do it yourself no one can help you except with advice. (You may not have someone else mill this or ream that, even if you stand and watch, unless that person is a manufacturer.)
