I finally went to the range today with some 10MM loads and 800X.

Here's what I got. The temp was 85 degrees and sunny. Wind was 10mph in my face.

Platform was a S&W 1006. Starline brass and CCI magnum primers were used and the rounds were at 1.250 C.O.L. Chronograph was placed 5 feet from muzzle.

First load was 8.6gr of 800X under 180gr Hornady JHP.
9 shot string averaged 1167 fps and 544 ft lbs of energy.

Second load was 9.6gr of 800X under the same bullet.
9 shot string averaged 1315 fps and 691 ft lbs of energy.

Third load was 10.6gr of 800X under the same bullet.
9 shot string averaged 1396 fps and 779 ft lbs of energy.

The third load of 10.6 were by far the most accurate of the three loads.

These loads are over listed maximums! The brass showed no signs of overpressure. Brass ended up about 15 feet away from me.

Once again, I have assumed the responsibility of these loads in my gun. You should start at the printed minimum and work your way up for your platform.

I worked up a load for my Glock 20 using 800X and was pushing a 200 gr. Hornady XTP at 1,275 fps out of the factory barrel.

I like the load but 800x is so coarse it doesn't meter very well in my powder measures.

I also like 800X in the 10MM and my 45 Win Mag but it is hard to measure accurately. I have an old SAECO powder measure that does a good job and I've found that I can set up my Lyman 55 to do a pretty consistent load.

I only used the RCBS 5-0-5 to measure out the loads. I wanted to get them as accurate as I could. I have a Lee Autodisk but dont plan on using it with the 800X.

For plinking ammo in 10MM I use Blue Dot.

For serious field loads I'm gonna keep using the 800X under 180 and 200gr Hornady XTP.

Anyone notice how sensitive the 800X is to temps?

Lennyjoe:

Was that S&W using the factory recoil spring? Modified in any way (ported, squared "firing pin stop" 1911's have that ability)? I've been wondering what Double-Tap is using to get their velocities. I don't like to load overpressure rounds, but in a caliber like 10mm, it doesn't make any sense to load 40S&W pressures, either. I'm still looking for hot and safe in this autoloader.

Thanks,

Saands

The recoil spring was not factory. Its a 22lb spring and the pistol is not ported. Its a bone stock 1006.

The 10.6 gr loads were showing signs of overpressuring. Cases were stretched and several fractured. I wont go above 9.6gr of 800X in this pistol.

I too would like to know how Mike at doubletap is getting them velocities. ;)

Why 800X rather than Blue Dot?? With my G-20, I can fill the case with Blue Dot in Starline cases and not get a "bulge". Not trying to get into an arguement, just wondering.

I used to go to Glocktalk quite a bit. Mike McNett seemed to favor Blue Dot. Thanks for the info.

Not sure if you meant it the way you typed it, but all you are saying about Blue-Dot is that it is virtually idiot-proof ... in other words, you can fill it up and not blow your pistol up. Well ... that IS a good thing ... but what we seem to be looking for is safe AND potent. LennyJoe posted some velocity numbers that verify that the 800x loads were indeed potent, and so I guess in the absense of numbers that were in the same ballpark, it is hard to judge how well the BlueDot is performing. I can load a 10mm full to the brim with H380 (a rifle powder) and not bulge the case too, but I'll be lucky to get 500 fps out of it and it probably wouldn't cycle the slide ... that would NOT be a good choice of powder ;) . Do you have any Chrony numbers on the full case BlueDot loads? From looking at the density of BlueDot, it seems that the full case load would also be a grain or so above Alliant's listed MAX load (at least for a 155gr JHP). Not that that is necessarily a bad thing ... but people should beware.

Hopefully there are some Bluedot #'s out there,

Saands

btw: Is there any way to search the GlockTalk forum? I went over there looking for load data and couldn't search :banghead:

Now we're talking ... I was trying 155's with VV-N105 and that combo seemed to top out at an average of 1357fps with 633 ft-lbs any more and the primers started looking like they were showing signs of too much abuse. I just noticed that Hodgdon's manual shows a 40S&W load with 135 grain JHP's over Longshot that gets 1480fps out of a 4" bbl :what: ... they don't even list a 135JHP in 10mm, but it seems like Longshot might have a safe shot at DoubleTap's 135grain numbers. I'd still like to find the powder that will give pressures less than 37,500psi and 155JHP velocities in the 1450 range. Looking at your 180gr numbers again (1300+), maybe the 800X or the BlueDot is what they are using.

I have neither BlueDot nor 800X, but I'm sure I can find some :fire:

LennyJoe: You mentioned 800x sensitivity to temperature ... would you care to comment a little more on that? It is seeming like a good choice, I can live with the difficult metering, but wild fluctuations in pressure due to small temp changes would not be on my short list of virutes for a hot-load powder :what:

TIA,
Saands

I actually asked if anyone had noticed any variations due to temps. No reply from anyone on it.

I forgot to dig out my notes last night for the Blue Dot. Will dig them out tomorrow.

I load 220 gr. LTCs to around 1150 fps in my Witness. It leads like crazy but it's awesome on bowling pins. I could go higher, but like to stay a little low since I throw my charges with a Uniflow and 800X meters so terribly.

Numbers for the loads shot out of my S&W 1006;

9 shot string average at 85 degrees temp sunny day.

Power Pistol 7.3gr and 200gr XTP in mixed brass and WLP primers = 1043 fps

Power Pistol 8.0gr and 200gr XTP in mixed brass and WLP primers = 1127 fps

AA #9 13.5gr and 200gr XTP in mixed brass, WLP primers = 1191 fps

AA #9 14.5gr and 200gr Speer TMJ, mixed brass, WLP primers = 1195 fps

Blue Dot 9.5gr and 180gr XTP in mixed brass and WLP primers = 1140

Blue Dot 10.0gr and 180gr XTP in mixed brass and WLP primers = 1175 fps

Blue Dot 10.5gr and 180gr XTP in mixed brass and WLP primers = 1225 fps

HS-6 9.1gr and 180gr XTP in mixed brass and WLP primers = 1118 fps

And the 800X loads;

First load was 8.6gr of 800X under 180gr Hornady XTP.
9 shot string averaged 1167 fps and 544 ft lbs of energy.

Second load was 9.6gr of 800X under the same bullet.
9 shot string averaged 1315 fps and 691 ft lbs of energy.

Third load was 10.6gr of 800X under the same bullet.
9 shot string averaged 1396 fps and 779 ft lbs of energy

The last load (10.6) of 800X stretched and split some brass which showed that it was too much to handle. I wont go above 9.5gr of 800X.

Some loads may be above max load limits and may harm your weapon. Start at the minimum load and work your way up.
