Does anyone know if any damage happens if you shoot a slug through a Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag barrel w/ the factory turkey choke? I couldn't recognize any residual damage after inspection, but I was told a federal reduced recoil 12 gauge 2 3/4" 1 oz slug was shot through my 835 over the weekend, and I always thought the warning was to prevent flyers due to the overbore or clogged barrels from the choke (and resultant KBs).. so if no boom or no collateral damage, there's nothing to worry about.

However, I figured I'd ask here first, as I never found a clear explanation for the actual reason Mossberg said NO SLUGS with the Ulti-Mags--and I don't want to have a problem with it next time I take it out as a result of my ignorance..

If anyone could enlighten me here I'd be grateful.

I think that the oversize bore of the 835 and slugs will cause pressure which can make your barrel blow apart causing bad things to happen. And shooting slugs thru any gun with tight restricted choke such as a turkey choke is a big no no, at best it will just rip the choke and threads out of the barrel, at worst it can split the barrel apart causing bad thing to happen once again. You also might want to check that barrel, choke and threads out a little if a slug was fired thru it, I'd tell the person that shot the gun that day that that was their lucky day being they only shot 1 thru it.
