Yetsrday I bought an old 870 in great shape, 28"bbl mod choke. ser#711xxxw.
Anythoughts on if this gun could handle steel shot or do I have to stick with some of the other high dollar non-toxic stuff.
Thanks

I've read that all Remington 870 barrels made since 1950 are metallurgically sound for steel shot. I've shot it in a 1968 Wingmaster, mod choke. When steel was absolutely crap, compared to todays steel, with no issues whatsoever. In your case I'd shoot it and not worry. If the gun was made in that time frame.

chas08,
Talked to the folks at Reminton today, he said the gun was made in 1960 and modern steel shot though a modified choke is no problem. Thought it would make a neat little Teal gun.
Thanks,
John

16's are fun to shoot if they are scaled to gauge I've got a couple of old 16 ga pumps that I have used steel in, and without issue. Thanks to the improvements in shotcups a lot of the old standard rules of shooting steel have gone the wayside. But the reputation for being a barrel wrecker still lingers on. Best wishes...chas
