My 870 barrel wont come off.... The little cap is like frozen on.... Any ideas to remove this? I tryed to warm it up, did not work. I notice there is a hole in the cap, do I need to stick something through this hole on top of the cap????

The hole is most likely for a sling stud. Sometimes the little boogers get stuck, wrap something around it like an old rag or corner of t-shirt to keep from scratching it up and use some channel lock pliers or similar. Lefty loosey, righty tighty. If that is not working i'd try and get some penetrating oil in it and let it set a bit and see if that helps

opps  I think I am doing it wrong. Gun is standing up. Face toward me. I can see the elevator ramp for shells, also I am on the side with the pump grip. So I just turn it to my right? or left?

Counter-clockwise while looking at the top of the cap. You also have to partially slide the action back, just an inch or less.

Try pushing down and turning. If I recall there is a detent and a small ball bering under the cap that keeps it from backing off easily.

well I had another problem today, I think it might tie into this. This gun(870 express) holds 4 + 1. later on I put 4 in the mag tube, one got stuck almost went in but did not. was stuck in there for a few mins. It was working fine before( then it only held 3). I think because its cold out the gun froze up.

Make sure the chamber is clear.Pull forearm half way back the set the butt of the stock on the ground and push straight down on the barrel. The magazine cap will now come off.

Are there cross slots cut in your magazine cap? If so, use something thin and safe like a butterknife blade to get some leverage. Some older 870s didn't have slotted magazine caps...

fwiw,

If it was ME, I wouldn't care if I dinged it up. (My 870 is hammered anyway.) I would tear into it with some channel locks. Or even channel locks with some cloth to protect the finish. Even if I destroyed the thing getting it off, it's not like that cap is irreplaceable.

(Or ask your local dealer/smith if he has one lying around.)

First apply a little liquid wrench or Kroil on the juntion of the cap and mag tube let is soak in a day or two. My 870s cap was hard to remove the first few times it will get easier. I put a little gun grease on the threads. If you still cant budge it, tap the cap a few times with a padded hammer. lastly if all the above fails use PADDED pliers or channelocks to unscrew (gun unloaded pointing up and slide back- turn the knob counterclockwise as you look down) thats got to loosen that :cuss: knob! now apply a dab of grease on the threads and work in back and forth a fed times. good luck!

so your saying, stick a pen in the hole so the mag spring pops off(might have to twist it a bit) and puts pressuer on the cap???? to pop off?

It shouldn't. On a Wingmaster, there is a clip that holds the spring inside the mag tube. On an Express there is a plastic plug. In either case the mag spring should not bear against the cap. Even if it did, it wouldn't prevent the cap from coming off.

Try the Kroil (it's amazing stuff). Then try a strap wrench - padded pliers - or as the very last resort, channel locks.

Leave the gun outside until it gets cool, then heat the cap up with a hair dryer.

The magazine cap is threaded with a springloaded ball detent. If you want to remove without damage try Channel-Lock pliers with rubber or leather to protect finish, looking straight down from muzzle end turn counter-clock-wise. Brownell's sells a special set of pliers simular to cannon plug pliers for removing this cap, I don't have them and have never damaged a cap. BTW Kroil is awsome so is PB Blaster for breaking loose rust. this more than likely a case of over tightening and two-blocking detent.

Adding about 1/3 acetone to PB Blaster or Kroil makes it penetrate a lot better. But keep it away from finishes and plastics and remember the acetone evaporates pretty fast.
