i'm in the market looking for an remington 870 rifle barrel with the cantilever mount. i have my eyes set on the remington on that comes with the scope. any suggestions on other good barrels and prices.

there are two factory remington barrels with the cantilever mount one cheaper than the other. what are the differences?

I believe the difference is the finish.

When I worked at a Gander Mtn. a couple years back, IIRC, you could get the Express barrel (parkerized-type finish) for about 65% of the cost of the Wingmaster (bright blued finish). Both were rifled and one should fit the other's receiver. In fact, I have a Wingmaster barrel just like the one you're after, mounted on an Express gun. So they're definately interchangeable.

I've heard vague things said also about the steel being different from the Wingmasters and the Expresses and maybe they are, but in real-world situations, I don't think it matters. Either will do the job.

Also, I don't remember exactly whether or not Remington offers a cantilever barrel with a smooth bore. I don't recall ever seeing one but that doesn't necessarily matter.

Good luck in your search.

Oh yeah, you might also want to check after-market vendors, too. If you can't score a Remington, I believe there are Hastings, Mossberg, and Ithaca after-market barrels available for the 870.

*edited to add: If you find one that you want, make sure the barrel ring is the same style as your original barrel. Depending on the age of your 870, you may or may not have a barrel ring with a little ball detent in place.

well i bought this gun new in januanary from gander. i found the remington cantilever barrel w/scope at dicks for $275 or so. i remember seeing them on ebay for as low as $200, same thing. @ basspro.com there were two types, the cylinder bore express and the fully rifled. i'm wondering what the difference is... aren't these available in 18" for the 12g?

All else being equal, a rifled barrel will cost more due to the extra manufacturing steps.

If Ebay has a "buy it now" for $200 compared to $275 from Dick's, Provided they're the identical critters in identical condition, I'd think even with shipping, you'd come out ahead w/ the one on Ebay. (I'd heard that Ebay wasn't allowing stuff like that anymore so I'm a bit surprised, actually.)

BTW thanks for satisfying my curiosity about the existence of smooth bore cantilevers. I figured they'd sell enough of them that it'd make sense that they made them, I just don't remember ever having seen one. Cool.

*edited to add: I don't know about 18" for the cantilevers. Mine is 20" FWIW. I do, however, have cylinder bore non-cantilever barrels on my HD 870's that are 18".

no they don't have it on ebay anymore but over summer i was desperate to buy one. now that deer season is less that 3 weeks i think (CWD in wisconsin), i really want one for those shot gun only zone. perhaps i will go buy the dick's one before someone else buys it. so saying the fully rifle barrel will give me a better performance in terms of accuracy and distance there for a higher price? got it.

Also, just in case the info's useful to ya: in a rifled barrel, you'll get the best results using saboted slugs rather than rifled slugs. The rifled slugs are designed to compensate for the lack of rifling in a smoothbore barrel. Just in case you weren't aware.

Good luck this season. I can already taste this year's mesquite backstraps.

yeah my buddy has the barrel i wanted and he shoot the sabots and i was shooting the smooth bore. they seem much smaller that the regular slugs. for his, you can hear the bullet whistle if you listen hard enough, first time i ever a bullet do that.

i'm at gander today and i find the remington cantilever w/scope barrel for $320. a bit higher than i had expected @ $275... well, at dicks they had a whole new gun with the rifled cantilever barrel w/o scope for $399, my dad should have an extra scope lying around somewhere so i don't know if it's worth it or... i'll drop back to see the price for just the barrel...

the associate at gander recommended me a hasting barrel that was on sale for $149 compared at $215...

Mossberg sells them on their web-site for $170....

trigga,
It's too bad you didn't buy a Remington Combo. The Remington 870 Express Combo # 81280 comes with a 23" fully-rifled cantilever barrel and a 28" Vent Rib barrel and 3 chokes. If you would have bought that you would have saves A LOT of money.

That being said, DO NOT buy a barrel/scope combo from Gander Mt., they are a big rip-off. Buy the barrel and scope separately from whoever you can find the best price. You are telling us you can buy a barrel and scope for $X.xx but not telling us what scope you are buying. That deal can be very good, very bad or somewhere in between. Please slow down and think before you spend money you don't need to spend like not getting the Combo to begin with. (I'm not putting you down at all, just trying to slow you down a little so you don't waste money)

Weaver makes a great shotgun scope that can be found for ~$135. Simmons makes a surprisingly good 4X32 ProSport Shotgun Scope for $70. There are a lot of choices out there. Give us a little more information and I'm sure someone here will be able to point you in the right direction and save you a lot of cash too. :)

i ended up getting the 23" barrel and scope from dicks for $250, (gander had the same for $320!!) Dick's also had a mossberg 500 with the smooth bore and rifled cantilever w/scope combo for $299 with $20 mail in rebate. i was going to get that but didn't approve because i never updated my address on my driver's licence... i might buy this combo for my brother who's first timer this year. i guess the factory scope is fine enough for me. i'll be using my 30-06 most of this season except for the shotgun only zones.

Too bad you had to spend as much for the barrel and scope as it would have cost you for a shotgun and 2 barrels. The Combos from Remington and Mossberg are VERY cheap compared to buying the pieces separately.

I bought the Mossberg 500 Field/Security Combo for $239 last year. The Combo came with a 28" barrel, 18.5" barrel, wooden stocks, plastic pistol grip, 3 chokes and a choke wrench.
