While I'm letting the 870 parts soak in Break Free to deal with my little rust problem, I've decided it would be wise to ask about one part I couldn't quite get disassembled and another I know I'll have a question about during reassembly.

First, the disassembly: Is there any trick to removing the pin holding the trigger in? The ones for the trigger assembly came out easily as did the ones for the carrier and safety, but this one doesn't seem to want to budge as much. It's lathered in lubricant as well right now in preparation for me learning the answer to this. I don't want to try just smacking a pin punch with a rubber mallet into the pin harder without getting an approval first.

Second, the safety. I know that many here have replaced or otherwise avoid J safeties entirely, but for now I'll need to put mine back in after I clean off the "button" of rust. Which way does that dreidel like detente sit under the spring, thinner part up or down?

I suppose the one positive side to parts of my gun looking like a really sick leopard is that I'm getting a nice look and feel for the internals of the thing, enough that I'm thinking about replacing the safety . . . but one potential for mechanical stupidity at a time for me :D

Neither Remington nor myself recommend owner disassembly of the trigger group. Hose it with scrubber, soak it with oil and reinstall.

dfaris can explain the safety stuff better than I. He should be along shortly.

The trigger pin can be resistant.
Use a punch to push it out from the LEFT side toward the right side.
Instead of a rubber mallet, use a plastic or small steel hammer.
The sharper shock will help get the pin moving.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the latest "J" lock safety so I can't help on the detent and spring.

The dimple in the detent is the guide for the spring.

Drop the detent onto the safety, then place in the spring, compress and install the retaining pin (taper first). Be careful as the spring will want to fly.

When it comes time to replace the safety, you will need a new detent and spring.

Brownells PN's

767-175-140 Spring.

767-232-230 Detent Ball.

For the trigger group pins, make sure the tip if the 5/32" punch is rounded, so that it won't slip and gouge the receiver.

Hope this helps.
