I have an 870 express tactical w/mag extension (7 +1).

I was shooting trap the other day (yes you can with a turkey choke) and loaded up the mag. It fed 3 shots then just stoped feeding any of the other rounds in the mag. I had to hand load to finish the round. You can add a round in no problem and the spring tension is fine.

The gun is new......perhaps 300 rounds through it with no more than 100 through the magazine. I did a strp and clean and it still won't feed a rounf from the mag.

What is it that releases the shell from the mag when you cock the gun?

It was working fine and then just stopped.

Any ideas would be helpfull.

thats the shell stop its a bar that contacts the head of the shell you should see it right in front of the mag follower unless you werent pushing the rounds in all the way then you would have a serious jam on your hands. so check to see if its broken

I've seen shell stops bend or break. Doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Another possible culprit could be the notches on the action bars.

Time to let someone look at it who knows 870s... sounds as if you have a hardware problem.

can you spot the part that may be causing the problem on the attached pic?

I'm still a beginner when it comes to shotguns.

Part # 55 or maybe 56. The shell latches are actuated by notches on the action bars (Part # 28 in the drawing) to allow the feeding of one shell at the time out of the magazine. The shell latches are staked lightly into their recesses in the sides of the receiver, but will pop out fairly easily if overstressed without the trigger plate in place to restrain them. If you accidentally pop out one or both, they'll need to be restaked by someone who has the proper tools.

It's also possible that incorrect assembly of the action bar arms back into the receiver after field stripping could be the problem.

Best bet- get it to someone who knows 870s and let them look... no need to make it worse...

Not to totally hijack this thread BUT - my first question is why are you loading three rounds for trap? ONE shot at a time, unless it's doubles, is the rule

oneounceload......I have heard of that "rule".....but I shoot trap for fun only.

I was shooting by myself, pulling my own birds and it was easier to load up 5 shots for each station.

I shot 3 rounds and it was during the last that I loaded up the mag.....good thing too because it is the only time and place I can load it up....else I would not know that it did not work.

I have on some occasions shot rounds with others (mostly beginners shooting for fun) and we always shot just 1 round at a time......guess it is safer that way ..... so not eveyone's gun is loaded all at one time.....your gun was only loaded right before you shoot.
