I'm looking to get a magazine extension for my remington 870 express, its the 20 gauge "youth model" with a 21" barrel. Should this fit the gun?

I'm also thinking of having the barrel cut down to 18.5 inches and getting a full choke. I'm assuming they can also screw out this dimple(s) for the mag ext. Primary purpose for the shotgun will be HD. Can a good gunsmith cut down the barrel and groove the muzzle so a choke can still be screwed in? Sorry for the dumb questions. :p

Yours might not even have the dimples---that is a VERY recent change in the 20ga models.

You will still need a magazine clamp.

Leave the barrel alone-- 3 inches isn't worth the hassle--you already have screw in chokes and the rib will look weird.

I would leave it alone, except for patterning the gun to find the 2 3/4" loadings it prefers, and shooting that gun to where it becomes an extension of you.
Including, taking a class.

That youth 20 ga, with the 21" inch barrel is one helluva serious shotgun just as is.
Dead serious, some bodyguards, private in house security and other folks use that set up, or the Mossberg Bantam equivalent.

No mag extensions, no side saddles, though a few do have lights.

You do want choke in a shotgun barrel.
From my experiences going back and some testings, to investigate and verify, there is a "magic" in barrels 21", 23", 25".

I mean I and mine have taken a 32" bbl, had it fitted for screw in chokes and kept cutting it about 1" shorter , re cutting to accept the screw in choke and shooting the same ammo, from the same lot numbers as a controlled test.

Hence for me, a factory barrel I want a 20" , as that is as close as I can get for most "police" or "riot" barrels.

The 21" Turkey, and 23" Bird guns, are best kept secrets in both 12 and 20 bore, and part of the magic is the length of barrels.

What one has is not only a shotgun a smaller, more petite person can handle, or physically limited person can handle they also have what many defensive instructers recommend.

-a shorter LOP ( length of pull)
-shorter barrel
-bone stock

Just add sling swivels for a simple sling and light if your environment and needs dictate you need/ might need one.

One of my pet shotguns I used in travel was a Ithaca 37 Police, with 20 inch bbl.
Another was a Ithaca 37 20 ga with a 21" barrel with external screw in choke.
In layman's terms this restriction was near SK2 or Modified.

Barrel was free, a fella fired it with mud in the barrel and insisted I have it.
I paid for the steak dinner.

This set up was great for quail, and for lessons inside shoot houses. Easy to tote, maneuver, and the balance was a bit ahead hands.

I did do one thing I and mine prefer on a serious firearm , no matter if handgun, rifle or shotgun.
Gold Bead front sight. Mine was 18k yellow gold, though 14kt is fine and what most folks use.

I have walked into a hotel, taken the elevator and nobody knew I had a loaded shotgun ...
I am the reason some ladies and others that travel have a similar set up with a 21" barrel.
They too can toss that gun in a garment bag , and enter, and exit a hotel room.

Oh, and its just a bone stock kids shotgun, for those areas of the country not real friendly to guns.

You may lose a whole more than 2.5" by shortening that barrel from 21" to 18.5.
In fact I am certain you will.

Reliability is a huge thing with me.
So I personally alleviate as much as can to not have Mr. Murphy show up at the worst possible time.
Like extensions and side saddles.

It does not matter how many rounds you have, as all guns run out of ammo , so one is best to know how to run the gun they have, and this includes keeping it fed.

Shooting is 90% Mental and 10% Physical.
Get the physical , such as guns and loads figured out and the quit messing with them.

The 90 % is where one gets, and ingrains the Software to run the Hardware.

Thanks for the info SM, it's truly appreciated. I purchased the M3 light mount for the gun, and an M3 tac lite is on the way. No way do I wanted to be shooting in the dark. I figure if I've got a light shining in their eyes and its dark, they can't see me, but they can hear SHUCK SHUCK and it should end right there 95% of the time.

You should consider the Surefire forend. I don't believe that the streamlight has a pressure switch, only constant on or off. You really need both methods of operating to use the light properly.

The youth 20G is an awesome HD shotgun, and the 21" barrel is perfect IMO. I wouldn't mess with cutting it down.

Don't forget to use a clamp with that magazine extension.

M3?
Surefire?

Hey, I bow to others on this light business.

Tea-Light candles in them neat little brass lanterns I know about.

I used tried bubble gum and mounting the little metal cup under the barrel but the candle would fall out and and knock out the fire as it fell.

Little brass lanterns have a hanger , and glass globe and this works better.
Just slip over barrel.
Sorta neat to see this lantern slide to and fro with recoil...

*grin*

Ahhh 20 gauge youth express, brings back very fond memories. I had one as my first gun and it was something special for sure. First time I ever shot it was with a slug and wow did that have a punch to it. I didn't realize that when I'd use it for small game or buckshot that it was as if I was shooting an air rifle. No recoil at all and hit whatever I shot at (provided I did my part). A few years ago i sold it to gander mountain to pay for some classes and hoped to turn around and buy it back at a loss in a week (class deadlines and all) but someone (who clearly wasn't as stupid as me) snapped it up before I could re-buy it.

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I found this interesting. I too have a "Youth" 870 20ga that I keep mainly for HD reasons. I've been thinking about mounting a light on it, but have no idea where to start. Do you guys have any recomendations?

Also, regarding chokes, right now it's got a modified choke. I was thinking that an improved choke might be better for HD?

Sorry if these are silly questions. I'm more of a rifle guy, still learning about shotguns...

"Usually", the best HD chokes are the Cylinder Bore, or the Improved Cylinder.

The traditional HD choke for actual inside the home is the open Cylinder, with most modern police guns now using the Improved Cylinder for better patterning at longer ranges.

Mounting a light can get expensive, or can be rather unsteady depending on how much you want to spend.
The cheap way is a clamp that clamps a small flashlight to the barrel or an extended magazine tube.
The better way is the Surefire type system that installs the light in a fore arm with a switch on the fore arm.

Thanks dfariswheel!

A couple follow up questions:

Can you get a Cylinder Bore choke tube for a Remington 20ga? I've seen Improved Cylinder for sale a various sporting goods stores but have never encountered a Cylinder Bore...

If I were to go with improved cylinder, would I still be able to shoot slugs? I've never actually tried a 20ga slug before and don't have any plans to do so, but would be nice to know if I have the option should I ever change my mind...

Final question, the "Surefire type system that installs the light in a fore arm with a switch on the fore arm" sounds interesting. Is this the type where the light clamps on the barrel and has the cable that goes back to the fore-arm with the switch? Or does the light mount on the fore-arm too? I don't suppose anyone has a picture?

Thanks again!

I had a 3 shot mag extention on the same gun. It came with a power spring and an orange follower. I liked it, but sold it.

You can shoot standard slugs through any standard choke from Cylinder to Full, but usually the best results are with Cylinder or Improved Cylinder.
Most people have better accuracy with Improved Cylinder.

The Surefire light is built into-onto a fore-end. The switch is on the fore-end. These are expensive, but most people believe them to be the best or one of the best shotgun lights of all:

Uh, does Surefire make a forend for the 20 gauge or are they all made for the 12 gauge. That size is going to be different.
