I am thinking about a HD 870 pump. I don't shoot a pump. Have always shot O/U and autos. Having said that, I have two pumps, a Mod 42 Winchester and a Mod 12 Winchester. But I don't want to cut off their barrels. I looked at a friends 870 and to chamber a round you have to depress a slide release on the front LEFT side of the trigger guard. On both of my Winchesters the release is on the Right rear of the guard. Is this normal with the 870? It is very awkard to me. Is a Mossberg 500 on the left or right and front or rear. Also, my Winchesters are 20 ga and 410, another reason I need another pump. Thanks for your answers

Since 1950, yes.

Seems perfectly normal to me. But then, I've been shooting 870s for about 40 years now... :D

Left rear.

You kind of get used to it after a while.

I have been shooting an 870 for a while now, and wrapping your hand around the bottom of the back of the receiver actually starts to feel right after a while.

If you start using an 870, you won't be sorry.

Re; 870 Pump Question

Thanks for the information. I have enough scattered around the house where I really don't need another shotgun, but I want one with a shorter barrel. All of mine are 26" or longer. The spare barrels I see are $150 or more so I figure I might as well spend a little more and have "just one more". Is Winchester the only maker to have the release on the right rear? I've been shooting some of mine over 50 years so I might be too set in my ways to handle that 870. Thanks.

870s are the only shotguns I've ever had. Release on left feels natural to me. I never even thought about it.

However, if I were you, I'd go with trying to get the same platform (e.g., Winchester). I currently don't want more than one shotgun platform. You have two I think. You're going for a home defense gun. It makes sense to be able to work the gun while you're half asleep with an unwelcome jolt of adrenaline. Would you feel comfortable doing so with a new platform?

Re:870

Well if I am in bed there is a 45 Springfield on the night stand and a Citori 12 ga under the bed with 00. I was thinking in terms of having a SHTF scenario and having to leave the house. I may just have to find an old A-5 barrel and have it cut down. That would be 5 rounds total. Thanks for your opinions. I might be able to hit the release with my trigger finger but having to reach around the trigger guard just feels backwards. Like trying to hit a lerf hander driver.

ODB, the FN Police Pump shotguns are Winchester actions with all the controls where you're used to them being. The guns are made right down the road from you at FNMI in Columbia, SC.
