Can anyone tell me about what these are going for? I have found one in a pawn shop for $159. It needs lots of work, some one has tried to paint it camo and most of it has come off. It seems mechaniclly sound just ugly, but I am wanting one to build a tactical HD shotgun. Thanks in advance.

That sounds like a pretty good price without seeing it. As long as it doesn't have any problems other than a scary paint job, get it. Paint is easy to remove.

I would check it over very well. The paint could be there to hide something.

Offer $130 for it to see what the shop owner says.

+1

Bad finishes can hide a lot.

I recently bought a used Wingmaster police shotgun that had a bad parkerizing job. My local refinisher took one look at it and recommended we not try to polish/reblue it because it was so badly pitted. I didn't notice the pitting under the parkerizing, but he took a small area down to bare metal on a heavy duty buffer and showed it to me. Instead we decided on a bead blasting to get the metal really clean, then a rough blue and a parkerizing.

Regardless, the external finish has no effect on the overall functioning of the shotgun. Internally it was just fine. That's what is great about the 870!

Well most of the paint has already come off, I'd say about 25% of the paint remaining. I think the owner just wanted it camo, and did no prep work first just cleaned and painted it. The bluing looks pretty good other than the scratches on it. The metal condition is not all that important, I am more concerned about function.

I function tested it without ammo ad all seemed good. The action was clean and didn't seem to have alot of wear. I don't think it has been shot a whole lot.

Thats a good price. I just paid 200 for an older magnum wingmaster a couple weeks ago. The one before that was 250 and the one before that one was 150. I have this thing for older 870's and Enfields. My wife thinks I'm nuts! I think the kids and grand kids are going to have a nice collection one of these days.

I paid about $210 for a blued 870 Wingmaster last year, with a couple of upgrades.

I can relate Jeff F! I have this thing for 1911's, shot guns and WWII weapons of all kinds. My wife thinks I am nuttier than a fruit cake.

rswartsell - The one I looked at is not an express its a wingmaster, I'm not sure of the differance in the two but I know the price sure is. I hate to buy a new express to dissassemble and not use most of the parts.

Prices for used guns tend to vary widely in different regions of the country. Around here, $160 for a Wingmaster- even a plug-ugly one- would be a grab-and-run deal.

External conditions affect resale value a lot as a rule. But if the gun is mechanically sound, a little paint is really a nothing problem. It's easy enough to get off with a little elbow grease.

Last Wingmaster I got used was a 1976 vintage Magnum receiver gun in pretty rough cosmetic shape but sound internally- and it slicked up like glass when I field-stripped it and cleaned it up inside. It was about $175 IIRC.

I don't see how you could lose at that price, if indeed the gun is mechanically sound.
