I just bought a used 870 Wingmaster and I want to refinish the stock and forend. I got the stock off no problem but I want to know how to remove the wood off the slide to be able to strip it. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Take a look at the exploded drawing at http://www.urban-armory.com/diagrams/rem870.htm . You need to get the fore-end tube nut (Part #27) off the fore-end tube in order to to remove the forearm. the fore-end tube is pretty thin metal, as is the magazine tube it rides over.

Getting the nut removed can range from easy to almost impossible depending on several factors. The threads holding it on are very fine and are subject to rust if a gun is not well cared for. It takes a partiular type of spanner to reach the nut easily, some folks improvise with a piece of flat stock shaped to fit, others get away with using needle-nose pliers opened up to fit the notches in the nut (but some of them damage parts in doing that too...).

I'd start out with an appropriate application of good penetrating oil to the threads no matter what approach I used.

Then there is the issue of reinstalling the fore-end when the job is done. Again, it is much easier to do with the proper tool- getting the forearm aligned so it doesn't rub the barrel on one side or the other can be tricky.

Good luck with it,

BTW, if you mean that you can't get the slide off the gun, you need to do the following:

1. Remove the magazine cap and barrel.
2. Over a towel spread double-thick on a table, slide the forend all the way forward.
3. From the bottom of the receiver, press in on the loading ramp thingie to move it out of your way and reach around carefully inside the receiver at the front lower corners. There are springs that hold the slide in. Press out on each side on these springs while gently pulling the slide forward, and the action bars should release and let the slide and bolt come all the way out of the receiver.
4. Pick up the parts that fell on the towel, and clean and oil them.:)

Then you can do what Lee says to get the foreend wood off the action bar assembly.
