I recently attempted to lengthen a forcing cone on a brand-new Remington 870 Express 20-inch bead-sight cylinder-bore barrel and I found that it was already lengthened, apparently by the factory.
The tap I used dropped into the barrel almost its whole length. There was less than 1/8 inch of the tap sticking out of the chamber; there is usually about a good 1 1/4 inches sticking out.
This barrel is marked 2 3/4" and 3" shells, yet there seemed to be a lot of "free-bore" in front of the normal chamber, almost as though the barrel chamber was reamed for 3 1/2 inch shells. The forcing cone itself looked to be longer and less steep then the normal factory barrels that I have worked on in the past.
The only other barrel that I've run across that had a "non-standard" forcing cone was my Marine Magnum. The forcing cone on it was already lengthened, but not to the 11 degree, 1 1/4 inches that my tap will do.
I'm curious if anyone else has found any discrepancy in factory barrels. It could be that your shotgun is like this and you would never even know about it unless you actually took the time to check it out.
Maybe this is why some shotguns just shoot inherently better than others out-of-the-box - they are really factory one-offs that they ship out anyways.
