some funny posts here...

what do some of you suggest the hunter should have done? ask the bear if it was tame prior to shooting it? Perhaps he could have jumped down in front of the bear and acted like the boogie man, screening the bear for the appropriate level of "wildness"

It is entirely possible that the hunter did not know it was essentially a pet bear. But I'm not betting on that....

That really is the crux of the situation. If he didn't know the history of the bear beforehand then there is absolutely nothing wrong with what he did. If he knew, as some on other forums who live in the area claim, the habits and history of the bear then it sucks, IMO.

All hearsay and speculation though. Trial by forum I guess.

I hope he didn't know about it.

Oh I don't know he probably just saved the DOW from having to shoot the bear eventually anyway. And he might have even saved a life as humanzied bear is a dangerous bear.

In the Poconos you would be harder pressed to find a bear that wasn't fed by humans. They think it's neat. These are the same people flocking to homes that border game lands then complain about the deer ruiing their yards.

Mr. Lewis said the bear would knock on the door when he was hungry.

I can easily see this turning into: Bear tears down door, mauls senior citizen.

The crazy part is the same people would defend the bear.

Quote from the wonderful movie "Forest Gump" ........ "Stupid is as stupid does"

As far as to the post, Anyone who had bear hunted much in Pa would have gotten a pretty good clue from the SIZE of this bear that something was not normal. I myself would have shot it no questions asked. But I also would have known in the back of my mind that something was up. I just wouldn't have really cared! As others have stated, that bear was a problem waiting to happen.

I doubt that there is even ONE hunter here that would have passed up that bear if it was in your range of shot. A bear in the wild, shot in season...

I had a black bear boar come up on me Elk hunting in Mt. in Sept. I already had my climbing limbs picked out in case it was a grizzly. He got about 20 yards away eating some berries. I stepped out and went "pffsst". He looked over at me and tore the woods up getting away. Right comical. I could have killed him easy enough. Never had any desire to kill a bear. No particlar reason why. I just don't.

Edit. Nobody needs to justify why they want to kill a bear to me or anybody else.

Well, if you shoot one in Montana and you are not injured by it chances are you will pay a hefty fine or even jail time. You will at least go through all kinds of interrogation and hassle.

So yes, if a grizzly gets too close climbing a tree is an option.

So "Spec ops Grunt", are you saying this could have become a case of "biting OFF the hand that feeds you?".

I'm with ROB 96 and others who defend this hunter.

If he is guilty of shooting a baited bear than I'm guilty of shooting baited deer as they feed on acorns in stands of white oak. The acorns were not placed there by me but the animals choose to eat foods that appeal to them.

The grounds keeper is lucky Bozo never knocked on his door the day he didn't have food. Wild animals who are not afraid of people are a scary thing indeed.

Yep, me too. He was in the woods, and saw big darn bear.

Yep.

The bear wasn't "tame." He was a wild animal, living in the wild and he no longer feared humans. If the bear became sick or injured, he may have started knocking on people's doors a little less timidly.

i say bravo to the hunter!

bravo for a record kill and bravo for possibly keeping one of the idiots in the town from being mauled!

i hear this type of thing all the time from the critter-hugger types; "oh he would never hurt anyone, he was my friend!" sorry but that is just stupid. i dont care how much you think yogi cares about you, it is a wild animal and is NOT a pet. hand feeding a wild bear is simply idiotic.

For the guy that said he was disgusted with the PA hunters - I am from Pennsylvania and I got thrown off a PA hunting web site today for saying the same thing.

ADD to your list - parents that takes their kids out on the first day and shoots does at 7AM in the morning when we have a two week doe rifle season in many zones.
The people who calls themselves hunters - are nothing more then killing machines who's only goal is to fill their tags as quickly as possible and then leave the woods.

Calling them a Slob Hunter is insulting to the Slob Hunters.
One had the odasity to say that they should allow the mentored youth to shoot does and not just bucks because his 7 year old kid got bored when he didn't see a buck in the first hour of hunting.
These kids plays so many video games that they think that real hunting is just like the video game and all you have to do is walk out and in 15 minutes shoot something and leave.
We are not teaching our youth how to be hunters - just shootists.

In my opinion - a 7 year old kid has no business out in the woods with a high powered rifle and half of the deer that are shot is shot by the parents and then tagged with the youth tags anyways - because it is easier for a guy to shoot anything with antlers then to have to wait for one that has 4 points on one side like you have to do in the zone where I live.

all im going to say is that coming from the great smokies, black bear are a every day thing around here. my guide service books trips for black bear on a plot of land around the city of gatlinburg, and i have read one to many storys of problem bear for my own good. this whole thing of feeding the bear and raising it! theres a great show about this, its call FAITAL ATTRACTIONS!

bears eat people, thats what they do. we eat bears, thats what we do!

Uhhh Daniel, little off topic there but question, Are you talking about Kentucky there or Pa? Reason I ask is the minimum age for hunting in Pa was 12 when I left there a few years ago. And if I can recall correctly, Kentucky now has an age restriction of 10 for Big Game.
I personally see no problem with taking kids out on the first day and letting them get some shooting in. Let them get blooded before the deer are so rattled up they can't see straight and go nocturnal after WW3 breaks out opening morning. Most Central and South Central Pa has WAY to high of a deer population anyway and the does need to be culled out.

Probably me. I still think that it doesn't say much for the guy or those who support him.

As far as age goes, I know I was hunting alone around the age of ten. But, that was a different time and kids grew up quicker probably because they didn't have electronic games and 500 channels to pickle their brain. Plus we needed the food literally.

A young hunter is as good as his parent or whoever teaches him. Maybe that is the problem.
