Anyone have an idea where to get an instruction booklet on the total break down of a 1943 8mm mauser,, its still in cosmelene, theres so much inside the bolt the firing pin wont even move.
Thanks

i'm so jealous.

one thing to keep in mind, perhaps the most important part of your disassembly, is that the safety on the bolt should be in the MIDDLE position, obviously meaning its safe, but not in the locked position to the right.

and when reassembling, make sure the safety switch is still in that same position. if not, you'll be back on here asking for tips on how to get it back together with only two hands, when a third or fourth would be useful.

when i got my mauser from cdnn, it wasnt swimming in cosmo, but enough so that the firing pin wouldnt move enough to ignite the primer. hot hot hot soapy water and a good toothbrush will get most of the cosmo out of the bolt.
should also make sure everythings 100% dry before you put it back together. your oven on say 150 degrees should work.

Cosmoline, ugh.

Recently had a couple of M-48's in cosmo to deal with. Spray brake cleaner (Casey's Gun Scrubber but cheaper) worked just great. It went in clear and dripped out, brown. Didn't have to disassemble the bolt, it came perfectly clean, after which I put enough Breakfree CLP in there to ensure smooth working.

Brake parts cleaner is your friend. It eats cosmoline very well and leaves no residue.

After that, just lightly oil the moving parts (bolt face should be DRY!!!!) and reassemble. You don't HAVE to dissasemble the bolt, but doing so allows you to make sure you get all the cosmoline out. If you don't, the brake cleaner will evaporate and the cosmoline will thicken back up.

I second what Spiff said, watch the safety. Oh, you'll flip it eventually. But avoid it as much as you can. I've practically ruined a decent night stand from such mistakes. (I move the sear up by pushing it against the table, then twisting the cocking piece[I think that's what you call it] back into place. Makes a nasty dent. I have heard you can use a screwdriver to pull the sear back. But I only end up slipping and banging my knuckles)

Carb cleaner and brake cleaner = good for metal.

A heat lamp works good for the stock. Let it sit, wipe off the seeping cosmo every half hour or so.

True, sort of. I took mine apart and soaked, scrubbed and repeated until spotless and I still get cosmo seaping out around the fireing pin when it gets hot. I have no clue where it is coming from that bolt is spotless.

Crap, you guys saved him from the mauser newbies' panic attack when then bolt uncocks and appears completely locked up and unfixable while disassembling  :D
