The prey: the common mouse
The weapon: 8mm plastic BB fired from a spring powered pellet gun. (as it turns out this was a poor choice, I should have gone with the gamo .177 caliber gas powered pellet gun. I briefly considered loading up the my single six with .22 shot shells, but didn't like the idea of discharging a real firearm in the house.)
Said mouse (perhaps mice?) have been terrorizing my domicile for the past weeks. I starting keeping the BB pistol loaded and cocked (safety on of course) at my desk for when I finally saw the bugger.
Tonight it happened. I heard him first, then saw him scurry out from under the book case. My hand snapped to the waiting pistol and *Sproing!* the first round zipped on it's way to the target. I'm guessing I must have hit him in the back, because he stopped in his tracks and started doing extremely fast rolls about his long axis, not moving mind you, just rolling in place. It was quite bizarre. Aiming as carefully as I could at his rapidly spinning head I squeezed off another round. That ceased his spinning but now he was pushing his now motionless front half across the floor with his back legs. Realizing I had not brought nearly enough gun to this fight. I quickly kicked my rolling office chair over to my buddies desk and grabbed up his BB gun (shaped like a desert eagle which, humorously enough, actually did throw pellets significantly harder than mine which looks like a berretta 92f). Taking carefully aim I sent the third and final BB square into the back of it's head, ceasing it's movement immediately (also causing it to bleed from both ears, which was a little gruesome).
Lesson's learned:
Traps were proving less than effective, and that I had seen the critter several times but always been to far away to stop or grab it gave me the idea to keep the pistol handy. I chose the BB over the pellet as I did not want to end up with splattered rat all over the floor, but I ended up knocking his brains out his ears anyway, so little was gained there. All the BB did was make the little fella suffer more than he had to. Next time I'll pack pellets.
In a nutshell: Always bring enough gun for the job.
