So I've been dying for a .22 revolver for the better part of a year. Awhile back I picked up a 39A and decided a Single Six would be the perfect companion. So I've been keeping my eyes open and asking questions.

Today, took a trip with co-workers to the local gun shop on our lunch break. The store had quite the extensive collection of Single Sixes, new and used. The guy behind the counter let me fondle nearly all of them before I asked to see the lonely one in the bottom of the case. It was a NIB blued model with a 9 1/2" barrel. When I took hold of the grip and held the weight of it fully in my hand, it was like one of those "ooooohhh" moments. :) The co-worker who was with me also handled the gun, and he pointed out why it might have fit so well - while the grip is obviously completely different, the thin 9 1/2" barrel creates almost the exact balance that my heavy 6 7/8" barreled Mark III slabside does (which I like to think I am able to shoot like a laser).

So, my questions are these:

- This will be my first single action. Is a 9 1/2" "Buntline" type model okay for that, or should I stick to more "standard" barrel lengths?

- What is the correct grip for a single action? I have been trying to learn how to grip high on my double action S&W 19. Is it the same for single actions? In the shop it seemed as though I had a tendency to curl my pinky under the butt.

- I noticed while handling it in the store, there is just the slightest bit of daylight between the grip panel and cylinder frame. Picking up a few of the other Single Sixes on the counter, some much older, I noticed one or two exhibited the same thing. The counter guy said with Single Sixes he sees a few that don't have a super perfect grip panel-to-frame fit. This true?

- I think I'm pretty much decided on a blued model, but will the aluminum grip frame give me any problems? I understand the stainless models have steel frames, but when I held a stainless in the store it seemed to add a lot of weight, and I like the traditional blued look.

- Should I stop worrying so much and just go back and buy it, because it seems obvious I am sort of obsessed with it already? :)

I wouldnt worry about the aluminum frame, even 22+Ps probably wouldnt hurt it.

Note: 22+P=made up by me

Yet another one:

Why is it in my Ruger catalog the 9 1/2" barrel lists at $425, while all of the shorter lengths in the same blue finish go for $503?

Buy it and don't look back !!! For awhile , I had a 9 1/2" Ruger in .32mag --- NEVER should have sold that one. I have a .22rf with the 9 1/2" brl and it is a great shooter -- the "tree rats" have learned the hard way !!!

It is fine to shoot with the Pinky under the grip -- HOWEVER - with a hard recoiling centerfire -- not a good idea.

Woohoo!

Love the 39, too!

I was going to say, I have the Single Six's big brother, the 10 1/2" Super Blackhawk. It's a great revolver. I've been contemplating a long Single Six.

I tend to like long barrels, though usually that means 6 1/2" to 8". The sight radius and natural pointing characteristics of a long-barreled revolver make for a shooter.:)

Now all you need is a buffalo-shaped gong target, a few bricks of .22LR, and you're good to go.

Nice, you won't regret the purchase. You will however think about barrel length alot because all of the lengths are perfect in their own way. I got the 5.5" barrel and I love it. Sometimes I wish I had a longer barrel. Sometimes I wish I had a much longer barrel. Happy shooting. There is nothing like plinking with a lever action and a single action.

That's a nice one! Good looking rifle, too.
Don't give the frame on the Single Six a second thought. You'll have to live a long, long time to wear it out.
BTW, my little finger also ends up under the grip butt on these six shooters. Not a problem on 22s.

What sight do you have on the 39A?

That would be a Skinner sight, made by a gentleman in Montana. He makes aperture sights for most Marlin lever actions and they're all the rage.

Can't recommend them enough, myself.

Hey Dean, you can get a 39A set up just like that, used, from Boise Gun Co right now, or you could a few days ago anyway.:)

(Not one of mine or anything. I'd sell a 39 right about when I'm living under a bridge and out of food.)

Thanks, Bear. I was mainly interested in the sights. Not really in need of a rifle. Okay, that's a big fat lie! I always need another rifle.

I'm going to have to get down to Bosie sometime after the snow melts, just to see what a big city gun shop looks like. I'm excited already...

Got some new grips on her last night and took her out this morning.

From a rest, it shoots quarter sized groups at 15 yards, and 3-4" groups at 50 yards. It's almost like a Ruger Charger with open sights. :D

Off hand shooting, the target looks more like a shotgun pattern than groupings. :( I've got some work to do.
