9mm 115gr. FMJ/JHP using Win. 231 load data

I currently load my 9mm with 115gr FMJ and 9mm 115gr HP/XTP, all on top of 5.2 gr. of Winchester 231 powder. I use a Glock 17 as my platform and have put several hundred rounds through without any problems and accuracy is beyond excellent.
I have used this load out for my Ruger P89 and haven't had any issues with functionality either. I use a reloading manual by Hornady, it is more then 10 years old so I want to make sure I am still good with these statistics.

Loueg0308, I generally don't exceed current published max load data as a practice and I limit my 115 gr loads to 5.0 gr of W231/HP38. Hodgdon's website indicates 5.1 gr as max load data at 1.125" OAL for Gold Dot HP jacketed bullet. Not sure what OAL you are using for your load, but if you are at the published OAL or longer, 5.2 gr should be OK for Glock barrels as I believe they are tested at much higher pressures.

What generation Glock model 17 are you using and how do you know that you are not having any problems?

I normally don't exceed max. loads, and I know I am close if not exceeding them. My OAL is 1.125" with HP/XTP and FMJ. I considered dropping down .1 or .2 grains just to be on the safe side. I don't mind losing a couple of ft/s, less wear and tear on the mechanics of the weapon.

I have a Generation 3 Glock 17 RTF. All the ammunition feed and extracted without a hitch and the groupings were all consistent (no strays). I visually inspected the extractor and inside the receiver and saw no unusual wear marks. I also inspected the barrel, the lands and grooves had no gouges or nicks present. I used this as a format to consider if I was having problems or not, I know I am not an expert and I would listen to anyone who has more knowledge then I do on this subject.

I am looking for a new reloading handbook to replace my 10yr veteran. If you have an edition that you would recommend or know of anyone that has one that is credible, I would appreciate the information. I realize having multiple handbooks would be the best way to compare values, but going to college they charge you a freaking arm and a leg.

I'm no expert, but generally I find that the most accurate loads are about 4 to 5% under max. Not being sarcastic or trying to dampen what you've told us in any way, but if you think about it, saying that your gun operates nicely at near max is not really saying much.

I'd highly suggest that you make incremental loads in 0.2gr steps down from where you are, using the same bullet and powder. You'll probably be able to move pretty far from you present load without losing any accuracy what-so-ever, and cut the gun wear even more. IMHO same or better accuracy, that's further from max, has got to be a good thing.

Hornady just came out with their 8th Edition which (if I guess right) mostly touts their new rifle powders and rifle bullets. Look for unsold copies of the 7th Edition to go on sale. Watch Grafs, Mid-South and Midway. When the new edition of the Speer came out, Grafs was selling the older edition (brand new) for $5.

In the interim, use the Hodgdon web site for free. They now market Win231 which is the exact same as HP-38. TICKLE HERE

I am shooting FMJ RN not HP. I have found 4.7g of HP38 at 1.150 works the best in my G17 RTF2.
Did you start at min and work your way up?
