Now that I have a 9mm 1911 I need mags for the range. I don't want to buy $40+ mags from Wilson for range use, just something reliable to play with. I think Metalform makes OEM mags for them and under their name I can get them for $20 each. Anything bad about them? Any other suggestions without breaking the bank?

I like Metalform mags. They make DanWesson 1911 mags in .45acp. I don't see any reason their 9mm mags would not be outstanding!

I pay the extra and get the wilsons myself, and they work perfect. Figure I can scrimp $20 somewhere else in my life once or twice.

Really happy with Brownells 10 round 9mm mags.
~$25

I have had 0 issues with these in my Springfield 9mm 1911.
They have baseplates installed.

I use these for USPSA so they don't always get inserted with loving care.;)
Less expensive than the Springfield ones and hold one more round.
probably 10K rounds thru the ones I have so they have seen a bit of use. (but I do have 7, all work fine, so not a sample size of 1)

I suppose I could pay more for Wilsons but when these work fine why?
Walkalong had a write on 9mm 1911 mags where he tested a few maybe he will link it for us.:)

These look the same minus the coating

The add says Zenith the package they came in says Metalform.
I ordered a couple (they were on sale a while back for $13.99 but have not had a chance to test them yet so I can't say for sure how they are..

My gun is fine with the Springfield mags, and the Brownells mags (will feed empty cases)
I did try one aftermarket one that did not work out well (ok but not perfect) but I forget what flavor it was. (may have been Mec-Gar but not sure)

The Brownells mags can be a little pain to unload by when they are full but really not an issue IMO. Most of the time I unload them by shooting:)

I second the recommendation for Brownawells. Work perfectly for me and hold 10 rounds. Also you will most likely get free shipping on the order.

They are identical to the Metalform mags as far as I can tell looking at them up close and with magnification. Run great. When they go on sale buy some.

Thanks for the link.
And yes they look the same as the Brownells mags minus the coating.
And $13.99 was a good price. (ordered three to try so now I have 10 10 rounders and 4 or 5 9 round ones. Never can have to many mags:D)

My STI works best with a Chip Mccormick style 9MM magazine. The little feed lip on the front really helps. I bought some tripps and they didn't work as well.

9mm 1911
Maybe not an issue but something to consider

The ejector broke… twice. The first time was just past 30,000 rounds and the second was at 46,000 rounds. In both cases, the gun continued to run for hundreds of rounds without any trouble. Springfield fixed it promptly both times.
The cause of the breakages: the 10-round Wilson ETM magazines were striking the ejector upon insertion. his also happens with the Metalform and Tripp magazines I have, but not with the factory supplied Springfield 9-round magazines.
So far I have had no issues with the Brownells (Metalform?) and my ejector but I am only at about 25K on my gun.
I will say when I insert them in the middle of a stage I don't take time to be gentle, but I am not slamming them in as hard as I can either.

Joes1911magmania on evilbay has good mags. I bought a pack of them for my Springfield’s and they match what came with both guns. They work as well as the 2 Wilson mags I have and none have caused any problems.

Do NOT get the Meccgar mags.
They’re ok, but the followers are the most brittle pot metal I’ve encountered.

I bought 4 from MidwayUSA on sale. Two had a minor fit issue holding the slide open for the last shot. I attempted to make a minor adjustment. On one, it broke as I tried to bend it immediately! Like it was made of glass or porcelain. The second one broke as I was shooting the gun the next day. I attempted to contact the company via email. No response! That was a month ago.
I bought 4 more metalform’s for even less. They’re excellent.

Brownells sells extra followers for Metalforms. Cost almost as much as mags. So, I’ll soon trash the Mecgars, and buy some more Metalforms.
I have two Wilson’s. Good mags but not worth 3x $.

Another vote for the Brownell's mags. I use them as mags for my duty gun, 5 for duty, 3 for range use, and 2 of the Springfield mags for range use. All have held up well to quick mag changes and being dumped on concrete, but I prefer the Brownell's ones to Springfields. If you are going to manually unload them, get an Uplula tool, and reverse load.

Ditto this, I have $8 spring / follower kits for my Wilson #47D’s and my Wilson 9mm ETM’s that I bought years ago and which I haven’t used yet!. Now these are the real values in 1911 mags!
